saorview from feed from sky dish

I used to have sky multi room and canceled it

I put saorview combibox in living room fine with feed from roof top ariel and sky dish on separate cables

The bedroom TV had sky from the same dish previously but the digibox broke. I ran a second cable from the ariel to the tv fine for saorview.

Last week I saw kid had pulled out the ariel coax cable from the bedroom tv and I just connected it back to the tv fine. I now realise that this cable is not the one from the ariel but rather from the sky dish

How am I receiving saorview from the sky dish alone?

The cable from the dish would have had an f-connector on it, that screws onto the corresponding connection on the Sky box. You wouldn't have connected that cable to the tv aerial connection without changing the connector or using an adaptor.

Are you saying the connectors had been removed from both, before you reconnected the cable to the tv?

no, I no just have the cable that used to have the f connector connected to back of TV and receiving saorview fine. There is now no connector on end of this cable at all but it runs to the sky dish. I put the f connector back on it this morning just to see if I was going mad here but when I connect it to the combibox it receives sat channels

Well one thing is certain, you are not getting Saorview fro the dish. If you live in a strong signal area then the cable alone could be acting as an aerial and getting enough signal to give you reception. It certainly happens where I live as we are very close to a transmitter.

you're right - I cut a foot of coax there and connected it and it picks up signal fine - only 5 miles from transmitter with line of sight

There you go, maybe an indoor or attic aerial will suffice - easier to maintain.

. . . I cut a foot of coax there and connected it and it picks up signal fine

Wouldn't be saying much for the effectiveness of the cable screening.

But it explains the result. How many homes must be fitted with low quality unscreened cable, mine included, and can do little about it?

Agreed. It's come up here before a few times.
