I don't know if this is in the right forum.

I'm looking to start a ba joint honours in ucd next year majoring in music and french then hoping to go on and do a hdip to teach those two subjects. I was talking to someone on here about it and they mentioned you're not allowed to teach a language (in my case French) in post primary unless you've done the erasmus. Can anyone here tell me if that's true? A friend of mine told me her friend got a diploma in french then did a hdip and is now teaching french. If it's the case that the erasmus is required to teach, I wouldn't be able to teach french. By the time I'd get to 3rd year (I.e erasmus) I'd have a three year old so the possibility of studying abroad wouldn't be there. Thanks in advance :)

As I understand it, for registration with teaching council, you must have spent certain amount of time in the country of target language.
Check with teaching council and ucd, there may be creative ways of spending time there with your 3 yr old to satisfy all.

Check out the above document. To register as a French teacher you must have....:

 Residential experience of at least three months in France or other country where French is the vernacular.

Thanks for posting that. Looks like you do need to live there.

Yes, it's the word "residential" that makes it awkward. As you say, you need to be living there. Otherwise, you just add up all your foreign holidays.

To be honest, though, I think it's a good requirement.

It is of course. I don't think I'd be able to become properly fluent unless I lived there. It's just awkward with a baby! I'll look into it and it might be possible for me to take a loan out to do it! Thanks for your help
