Early next year I will be on the hunt for an upgrade of my sony hx9v and I'm looking at cannons eos 600d and cannons eos m compact.

    Any recommendation and why?

    Cheers

I think it all depends on what you want to do. If you want a small camera for general snapshots the EOS-M would be fine I'm sure.

I personally have a canon SLR & a few lenses, that I use in a wide variety of shooting situations.

    Advantages of SLR
    - It has a viewfinder. This is a huge plus.
    - Better grip, easier to hold, better ergonomics (Much has been made of touchscreen controls - but with my camera I can adjust aperture, ISO, and move AF points around without taking it away from my eye. Unbeatable, IMO)
    - access to a much wider selection of lenses, no adapter required.

An SLR MAY have better battery life, it MAY have better dust/water sealing, it MAY have faster shooting rates, it MAY have a better autofucus system....you'll need to check that out yourself.

    Disadvantages
    - SLR is bulkier, especially if you buy a few lenses for it. I use a backpack when I'm out & about with mine. Grand if I am on my own or on a photowalk , a bit intrusive when just going out for a social/family occasion.

i have a 600d & a mirrorless 4/3 olympus cam. i use the olympus more than the 600d, for compact reasons. i love the little thing.

having said that, if i want to use a dslr, i choose my 5d2 if it's important, 600d if i'm lazy

read reviews on the eos-m before i bought the olympus, and went for the oly instead. didn't read too many good reviews for the eos-m

Look at the micro 4/3 system rather than the eos m. Lenses.

All the poor review of Eos M was made prior to the firmware upgrade. It performs much better and quicker since the upgrade.

The EOS M is amazing value recently since Canon slashed its retail prices.

    EOS M
Touch screen controls on the M, even if improved, arenot going to be as easy to manipulate as dials and buttons on an SLR. You'll probably be less creative as a result.
