Hi to all. I am currently doing eng Irish maths French accounting chemistry and geography. Unfortunately biology is on same time as chemistry and as that is needed for some courses I chose it. The only other science subject clashes with French and as this can be a course requirement in some courses I chose it incase I change my mind. At this moment in fifth year my favourite subjects are chemistry and maths. Would I need to biology to study med or is chem ok. I was just wondering if these subjects would be ok to do medicine. Also regarding points I only got 4 As and 7 Bs in the JC as I put in the minimal effort needed so would I be able to attain the high points needed. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this

Here are the minimum requirements (outside of the points):

Leaving Certificate: Passes in six subjects including English, Irish, a third language, Mathematics, one laboratory science subject & one other recognised subject. Two of the six subjects must be minimum HC3.
Minimum 480 CAO points or equivalent which must be achieved in the same examination sitting as subject matriculation requirements.
    Plus HPAT admission test.

So basically no, you do not need Biology. However, I'd imagine it would be very helpful if you could manage to take it.

Did you not ask nearly the exact same question in the thread that is still on the front page? People have been answering you in there?

If you aren't prepared to turn into a machine for the next 15 years then medicine isn't for you. It takes enormous amounts of study both in 2nd level and 3rd level, followed by some of the most notoriously long and unsociable hours imaginable. While the end result is a standard of living that most would envy, if you can't handle the hard work then I wouldn't focus on it.

If you didn't work for the J.C, odds are you aren't going to change to the extent required for the L.C

If you don't do biology and have an interest in Medicine then you are absolutely kidding yourself about your career choice. Its not a requirement but you'd want to have a strong grounding as if nothing else, it will make first year a shade easier for you.

As has been said, you'll need to be a studying machine for the next 10 years at least. So unless you've done it before, you won't be able to do it. Honestly. Self application is everything.

Medicine is the toughest course there is from every aspect. Most other courses you can cruise through and do the minimum, Medicine you have to be the very best going in and the very best through out. I would strongly urge you to get professional career advice and talk to current students.

Yeah I was similar in the Junior Cert 4 As 4 Bs 3 Cs. For the Leaving Cert I studied a little bit consistently through 6th year and got 540 points. Work, make sure you get the A1s in your top subject and you'll be fine.
