VPS FTP issues

Hi there, I'm having issues connecting to my Centos VPS. I know that I can't use Passive Mode when connecting, so I've set that to Active.

In Filezilla, I'm just getting a generic "Could not connect to server" message. 

What's the best way to fix this? Are there detailed error logs? I've connected to the server via SSH with the admin details, so I can view logs etc. there, can I?

Could it be a firewall issue? How can I check this?
