Moving from private car to van insurance and no claims bonus

This time last year I sold my car and bought a van for private use. I took out a commercial insurance policy with a new insurer and submitted my original 5yrs + no claims bonus that I had for my car as requested by the insurer.

Now 12 months later I receive a renewal notice and my no claims bonus has changed to 1 year with no evidence of my previous private insurance. When I phoned the insurance company for an explanation they told me that they couldn’t acknowledge my car insurance no claims bonus and that I should go back to the previous insurer for this.

Are they entitled to do this? All my years of no claims seem to have disappeared just for changing to a van.

Not sure on the legality of it but I know that it has happened to me with Aviva on a similar case.

I have just insured my van with insuremyvan.ie and am still waiting on the paperwork, (I only called them up last Friday evening). I noted from their site that they honour private no claims discount/experience and it seemed to bring the quote well down - half that of my renewal!
