I am having a problem with my avensis. It has 150,000 miles on the clock. I am finding it hard to change down into second gear. It always works fine going from first to second but third or fourth to second is hard. Anyone know of any problems it could be?

I have had a little bit of bother with my avensis (03 1.6) gearbox with second being a little hard to get into. I took it to the garage and they cleaned around the bottom of the gear stick (there was a lot of dirt built up in there). It is not perfect since but it made a big difference.

OP might be helpful if you put in the year and engine your car has.

    Cheers dh0011,

Car is a 2005 1.6 (I think that is the same engine as yours)

Crud/wear in the linkage between the shift-lever and the 'box, most probably.

    Cheers Jim & dh0011,

Good to hear it is probably just a bit of dirt. I ll get it cleaned by the mechanic in the next few days.

Last time I got mine serviced mechanic noticed my gearchange was stiff said linkages may be worn but would be ok for the time being I have 155k miles on my 04 1.6.

If cleanup won't help - change oil in gearbox.

    Preferrably Motul Gear 300, 75W90. :)

went to the mechanic. He said the linkages are in a bad state.

I took my own to a garage to have a look at my problem with the gears. In advance of this I went and got some mobil1 fully synthetic 75w90 oil. I asked the mechanic I took it to have a look at the linkages and change the oil and if he spotted anything else let me know.

I called back to him about an hour ago. Turns out that when the gear cables were on in the wrong place, once he said this I started to relax as I thought small problem which was fixed.

Then he said that the gearbox oil was in a very bad state. He showed me and it was jet black. It was like a waxy grease.
I am hoping that this is that lad who put in the clutch used the wrong oil and not a bigger problem in the gearbox.

That said she is driving like a new car now so happy out.
