Installing Car Stereo in House

Hi All and thanks in advance for any help,

I have a spare car stereo which isn't worth much so thought i'd take up this project.

I found a guide on how to use a computer PSU to power a car radio:
    here

It was suggested to me that something like a Samsung charger would have 12V output too. But from Googling, I think Samsung chargers are only 5V?

Wondering if anyone has ever done anything like this?

What are you installing? Is it a simple car stereo with two speakers or is it a multi amp set up requiring a decent amount of current? Chargers won't come within an ass's roar of providing enough current for even the most basic car stereo. You'll get away with a 12V supply but 13.8V would be better. Current is critical but that will depend on the equipment you're using. Can you post make(s)/model(s) of what you plan to use?

See my thread from earlier this year. The title is misleading given the direction the thread took.

I had a quick look through the user manual for that stereo. It doesn't state the current requirement or the main fuse rating. What rating is the fuse? If there is no rating printed on it, what colour is it?

The power supply you posted can deliver 16A at 12VDC. This should be enough but depending on how the stereo performs it may clip at high volume if the PSU isn't delivering enough current.

Give it ago - I think you'll be OK. As long as you wire it up correctly you won't do any damage by using that PSU.

One thing you need to bear in mind is the continuous +12VDC required by the stereo to maintain memory back up. If you don't have this then the unit will loose all of its radio station presets and audio settings every time you switch off the PSU.

cheers crosstownk, will check the fuse on the stereo later.

had thought about losing presets if i turned the PSU off, but I could live with that.

You may say that now, but after a few retunings and resettings you'll get a pain in your ar$e real fast.
