So, we liked Top of the Lake, Utopia, we like Luther too.

short little runs, maybe with a conclusion like TOTL, so not really a cliffhanger for a second season. Self contained stories that can be watched over a couple of nights.

    any recommendations?

Take a look at This Is England. There's 2 further installments This Is England '86 and This Is England '88, with third due soon.

One that comes to mind is Harper's Island. It's a Whodunnit type of show that aired a couple of years ago, and was only intended to be a season long so everything was tied up in the end. While it is by no means an amazing show, I thought it was quite fun to watch. I'm pretty sure the series is on Netflix too.

    The Slap?

I just started it yesterday but I like it so far (8 part Aussie drama based on the bestselling book of the same name).

WhiteChapel(it's on Netflix FYI) - Its 2 seasons with 3 episodes each. I am surprised i never heard of it as it is brilliant
Season 1 - Set in modern day(2008) someone in London is recreating the Jack the ripper murders
Season 2- Set in modern day again someone is trying to recreate the Kray twins

very good show, almost as good as Luther

The Last Enemy (2008). I found it on American Netflix.
Thoroughly enjoyed this 5 parter. Great cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, Max Beesley and and Robert Carlyle.

Season 4 is underway, 2 of 6 episodes out already.

Seasons 1 and 2 have 3 episodes dealing with one case. Seasons 3 and 4 have 6 episodes dealing with 3 cases (2 episodes per case)

Sherlock is another great "short run" show. A modern day Sherlock Holmes adaption. Two seasons of 3 90 min episodes so far.

It's good but it does end on a massive cliffhanger on both seasons so not really what the OP was looking for.

    This too shall pass.

brilliant :D hopefully Netflix gets it soon. I find it a little under rated.

Cuckoo is another great one actually. It aired on BBC Three about a year ago, starring Andy Samberg and Greg Davies. Only 6 episodes in the first Season, and Season Two has gotten the go ahead which is surprising as Samberg is starring in his on Show in the States. Anyway the six episodes were good fun to watch, English humour mixed with Samberg's goofball American humour which I thought was a good mix. The series went under the radar, but was refreshing to see a major-ish US star putting his efforts in a small UK production.

Generation Kill was a great show
The Syndicate has two season both different story lines about lotto syndicates.

Mad Dog is also decent show but the last season wasn't the best

It's 13 eps of 40 minutes so probably longer than you are looking for, but I'd suggest Awake. It's good throughout, but loved the finale.
