Importing 20 year old car from UK - VRT Question

I'm considering travelling to the UK in the coming weeks to purchase a 1992 car. I've never imported a car before so I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it has to be VRT'd immediately?

I'm not sure when I will be able to get the car to a test centre (is there usually a long waiting list?) but I will not be driving the car until it is on Irish plates, it will be kept in storage on my own property.

Will they want to know in the test centre exactly when I brought the car in to Ireland and am I likely to face a penalty for not getting it registered immediately, if so how much?

Apologies if these are stupid questions.

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/faqs-vrt.html

Try that for starters under "When must I register?"

7 days to book and appointment / 30 days to register. They'll want to the see the car and the paperwork.

Only selected NCT centre do registrations. The vehicle registrations are done separate from the NCT tests.

Penalty is something like 0.1% of the VRT due for every day overdue. Soon racks up if you get rumbled for leaving months.

I know the actual law has been quoted here before, and that it says , as above , you have x amount of days to import it.
Various people on here have suggested a day trip to Newry before you import it in the months to come, so as you can honestly say,' yesterday 'when asked the 64, 000 $ question.

I would be surprised and would eat my hat , and pay 50 euros to charity, if anyone on here can say ,' yes, I know someone who was charged the extra'.

No need to give exact details, just say you know, and nominate the charity.

I think if you import a car from the UKNI you have to state where it was stored or somesuch.

You also might have a problem if Customs happened to have seen it coming into the country and you also run the risk of it being seized on the way to NI as you aren't entitled, as an Irish Resident , to be driving it here.

the VRT on a 1992 car won't be much I guess (and therefore nor will the penalty.)

Well apparently someone who didn't know the ins and outs was stung:

and that was before the Category C VRT increase to €200.

Your 50 yoyos is safe though until someone comes along who actually knows of this person.
