i started building my pc at the weekend and yesterday evening i began to connect all the wires. i went to turn it on and nothing, no led's glowing, its just dead.

im assuming its something im doing wrong or not connecting propperly, that or the psu i bought is dodgey. ive disconnected everything and im going to try re connect everything and hope for the best.

is there any general rules to follow by or anything that i might be missing out on as it looked like i connected everything correctly.

ive a zalman z9 plus case with an amazon 450w 80+ psu with an msi 760ga p43 mobo.

Is the switch on the back of the psu turned on? Do you have a different kettle lead you could try? List out what connections you are using on the psu so we can spot if there is anything missing

Also, make sure your cable from the case is connected to the appropriate "power switch" connector pin on the motherboard.

i'll try swapping kettle leads now and hope for the best, at the moment i have only recconnected the main 24pin mobo power and the cpu power sockets, when i flick on the psu at the back nothing happens.

will try recconecting the power switch from the front again and hope for the best.

what are tell tale signs your psu is broken?

normally there is a green light at the back of the psu is this lit when its connected to the mains?

no lights appear on either kettle lead on the psu, a slight electric buzz sound at one point leaving it plugged in for a few minutes but thats it

hats strange normally you would hear the buzz sound with connecting the kettle cable to the psu. very strange for it to happen after a while

but my guess is if the light at the back doesn't light up its a faulty psu

if you have another pc it might be worth while pulling the psu from that to test
just to fully determine if that's the problem

three seems to be my lucky number, i tried another power lead(the third and last one in my house) and im like a kid on christmas morning, the psu light up and worked :D:D

thanks guys, hopefully i wont have to ask many more questions.

i spent the evening fault finding last night. the psu works thankfully, i plugged just the mobo power and cpu power with the cpu fan and all was good.

slowly one by one i connected more parts and it was working fine( well it powered on i didnt have time to plug in a monitor and enter the bios. it seems that when i go to connect the extra case fans that come with the zalman z9 plus case it dies, as if i didnt connect the plug to the wall, could it be a problem with one of the case fans? i'll post a few pics of the connectors i reckon are causing my troubles, when i connect them i think im breaking the circut somehow.

I always find that kettle leads are the best candidates for taking fuses out of, so sometimes you'll root ouot one that has no fuse in it. I have a box of these culprits!

all sorted in the end, might buy a few spare kettle leads and a box of fuses just incase.

im in love with this computer now, my poor girlfriend wont see me for months!
