I understand this is PC building but hoping someone can help a cluless mam. DS(12) wants a gaming PC. Building is not an option but from reading threads here I'm leaning towards buying from overclockers uk or pcspecialist.co.uk (or any other recommended site).

    Anyhoo here it goes

    1. What is your budget? He has saved E1,000 but i think that is too much for his age so I'd be thinking around E700 plus shipping costs, even less if possible

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming, he plays Skyrim, Minecraft and other games

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes, really don't like windows 8 so windows 7 or lower not fussy

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

    5. Do you need a monitor? No we have an old one at home

5a. If yes, what size do you need. N/a

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? only if old one doesn't work

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Keyboard, Wireless Card(don't know what this is - gussing we need it, Card Reader (don't know what this is) dvd player is needed too
    [/B]
    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? no idea what this is

    8. How can you pay? any way

    9. When are you purchasing? Soonish, I'm trying to put him off but it's all he talks about

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? n/a

Is there a particular reason that building isn't a viable choice?

Hardwareversand will build it for a fiver now I think. Very handy to have it all set up when arrived. You will probably need a 1080P monitor in the build as old monitors have low resolutions and will look ****e!

Would have to agree with this. Building a PC from scratch would be great experience for a 12 year old

building is not an option because i don't think he would manage it and i certainly don't want a pile of parts taking over his bedroom.

Ok will add monitor to the list.

Would love someone to recommend a spec or any help in what to get - really clueless here

I'd have him build it, personally. If it's got half a brain, and is interested in this stuff, he'll figure it out. There are tonnes of Youtube videos around, as well as plenty of people here willing to assist. It'll also mean he's infinitely less likely to come looking to you to solve problems down the road, as he'll know how to take care of them himself.

Again I just want to buy I understand that this is the PC Building & Upgrading (or is it the parenting forum ;)) so I have obviously posted in the wrong forum, if there is a more suitable place to post in could someone point me in the right direction.

But thanks for taking time to reply I understand it must be annoying answering such posts

Hardwareversand is a good place if you're going to build it yourself but, I wouldn't go with Hardwareversand if you want it built. There have been a few people on here that have had problems with them building it. Plus, the after sales support wouldn't be that great. I think OverclockersUK would be ideal. They have a webnote system in place to help you and an active forum. I've never used pcspecialist.co.uk but, they come highly recommed here. There is also SCAN similar to OverclockersUK but I've never used them also.
Building a PC is very easy and the cheaper way to go but, if thing goes wrong down the road you're on your own. Although fixing it yourself can be very rewarding in its own right.

How will the computer connect to the internet.
With a wire or on the Wifi?

You are in the right place, and good on you coming here rather than getting ripped off with those prebuilt machines. Some just feel very strongly that building yourself is totally worth it in terms of learning and that rewarding 'I did that' feeling of the machine booting first time.
You will still need to install Windows yourself but that's simple.

€700 is a healthy budget too.

Gimmie a little while to put something together.

Might have gone a little overboard on the budget...

    Item|Price
    BenQ GW2255|€99.00
    8GB-Kit G.Skill PC3-10667U CL9|€59.73
    Seagate Barracuda 7200 1000GB, SATA 6Gb/s|€57.74
BitFenix Shinobi Midi-Tower USB 3.0 black, ohne Netzteil|€53.03
    XFX DD RADEON 7870 1000M 2GB D5 2x mDP HDMI 2x DVI|€168.46
    LiteOn iHAS124-04 schwarz SATA|€16.45
be quiet! PURE POWER L8 500W|€57.13
    Rechner - Zusammenbau|€20.00
    Intel Core i5-3470 Box, LGA1155|€166.85
    ASRock B75 Pro3, Sockel 1155, ATX|€65.09
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€782.47

That will come built, but with no software installed.

If you would be comfortable with the idea, you could meet with one of us sweaty nerds and we could take your son through building and installing software.
You save €20, don't have to worry about installing Windows yourself and the young lad gets an education in expensive lego.

Thank you so much Genghiz Cohen for taking the time to reply.

This is exactly what i needed and thanks for the offer of the help building but we live in the back end of no where so I don't think that would be an option.

We have wifi in the house so do i need to add anything to the shopping list for that.

My first experience building was a tough run and I considered myself pretty well up on the whole thing. Bent a pin on the MB, which I almost cracked trying to get the cooler into, not to mention two days fidgeting with harddrives.

I could build one in my sleep now, but wouldn't recommend it to a 12 yr who isn't overly keen on building it in the first place.

If the computer will be near the WiFi router then the best option is to get a wire (Called an Ethernet Cable) and connect directly to the computer that way, otherwise you will need to add a WiFi adapter to the build.

    Bloodbath has one in his.
