Looking at a car. 60k km. For sale by a other-brand main dealer.

In very bold text in the ad it says: As is - No warranty

    a) Can they do that?
    b) Considering this is a pretty newish car with low enough mileage at a pretty established main dealer..... I have alarm bells the size of VW Beetles going off in my head....

I'm not posting a linky to the car, I'm just curious with regards to the above.

yeah, they can but you still have your Statutory Rights. The car has to be fit for purpose etc

It just means they won't sell you some dealer warranty. As said, you still have the basic rights.

Ok, that doesn't seem so bad after.

I'd wonder if this is something they do for all their cars or just this one.
See if you can find more ads by them.
Dealers often give a certain warranty with their cars, it's one of the reasons people use a dealer instead of private.

Checked a few more of their ads. They seem to have 2 standard blurbs. One very rosy for cars 2009 and newer and for anything older a less rosy one which includes a 'no warranty' statement.

    looks alright so.

Just because you still have basic rights doesn't mean it won't cost you an arm and a leg to pursue them. Plenty of horror stories here of people going to solicitors and the courts, and all of that costs money which when you balance versus the cost of the car is nearly always not worth it.

If a dealer is that prepared to offer 'no warranty' then I'd walk away and buy else where. Too big a risk in my eyes, you may as well be buying privately. If your reputable and selling a good deal then you should be prepared to stand over it.

Follow your instinct and run a mile. If they wont stand over the cars they sell (assuming its not a banger worth a grand) then you need to ask why. Most garages will offer 3 months engine and gearbox as the very least for all cars.

    @OP,

Get AA or equivalent to give the car a serious once over check. If the dealer has nothing to hide they should welcome the inspection

Dealer prices without the perks? Nah..

If it is a fairly newish car with low mileage you have to ask yourself why the dealer selling it, is not willing to stand over it? Is the car priced very cheap compared to similar cars being sold elsewhere?

    Ironclaw is right
If a dealer is that prepared to offer 'no warranty' or 'as is' then walk away and buy elsewhere.
Most dealers do offer 3 months warranty for engine/gearbox and even then you may find yourself in trouble to force them to do so

I recon the price and mileage of the car is representative for the year. Right in the middle of the road in regards to everything.

It appeals to me as it's local.
...And I like the colour of it too.

But it's not a particularly good deal. Plenty of similar examples around. I'm quite happy to walk away from if the spidey senses are tingeing and I recon they are.......

Middle of the road for what though? There is usually a fair difference in the pricing between dealer and private sale.

It would want to be competitive with private sale prices for me to even go view it otherwise what is the point in buying it over a private seller? Even at that I would still be curious as to why the dealer is not offering a warranty on it given it's young age and low mileage. Why doesn't he have enough confidence to stand over it? Is it an established dealer or one of these small time dealers selling cars from his front driveway?

What's the car, year and mileage. The no warranty would want to be reflected in the price as said already. But having said that what does any three month engine and gearbox warranty cover anyhow.

I bought a used car recently with three month engine and gearbox warranty

I already had an engine part replaced, and it will be into a main dealer tommorow to get a diagnostic as the part fitted by dealer i bought from didn't work.

It more than likely needs the surrounding parts done also including timing chain etc

I certainly wont be footing the bill
