    Good morning,

I ma hopefully going to Males via Colombo this October and was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with Sri lankan airlines (boeing 737)?

I am a terrible flyer and take medication to chill out. It will be my first flight in a while that inst etihad or emirates back to Dublin. I have canceled previous holidays due to a fear of flying.

    Cheers in advance.

SriLankan airlines do not operate any boeings, they're all Airbus. I don't have hands on experience with them but they have received a lot of awards as best airline in region from many respectable authorities , so I guess they're good

don't ever let fear stand in your way in life, remember - every one of us will die some day but only few of us have lived...

used them from London to Colombo in 07,
    very friendly,
variety of food was great and tasty and was fed a good few times.
    large variety of tv entertainment,
    seats were smallish

Aeroflot doesn't do commercials, as far as I know...

this is not an "After Hours" forum so keep your jokes to yourself. Fear of flying is no laughing matter, if you have something valuable to add that might help OP to get over his/hers fears then please contribute.

with that "antique" video from early this century (maybe even late 90ties) you pretty much proved my point - aeroflot really doesn't do much commercials

that aside, I don't have a problem with your joke per se, I just can't help to notice that topics in this forum get derailed a lot quicker than, say, 1-2 years ago and it makes me sad. it used to be a place where people can ask genuine questions and receive appropriate answers, share their passion for aviation and discuss technology/events. feeling a bit nostalgic :(

But people are giving the OP serious answers too 2 proper anwsers 1 joke :D

I don't like flying myself either (probably not as terrified as OP though)

Thanks for the feed back, I don't mind the jokes! Unless I'm about to board.
Male Maldives is out the window now, the GF is torturing me. She wants to go to Kerala and the airline is jet airways, what's the low down on them?
I can go Oman air either which is a bit more expensive.

I'm sick of not going on holidays and need to get over this fear, only got it in my mid 20's. I work at an airport and also got loads of free flights playing rugby but avoided away games so I wouldn't have to fly. I'm sick of getting doped up to fly also. Does anyone know of a hypnotherapist or something in Dublin who specializes in this field?

    Cheers

Best way to get over your fear is take a leap of faith and go up in a light aircraft you'll enjoy it and it will help :)

As Andy says going for a flying lesson and having the controls in your hand will make things easier, but for some thats not an option.

Google "Fear of flying Ireland" and you'll get a number of good results.

I also think this article from last year is good

    http://www.thejournal.ie/readme/column-fear-of-flying-wont-stop-me-i-am-getting-on-that-flight-461150-Jun2012/

Good luck, and remember you can always post in the "Ask an airline pilot" thread here to get some answers as to what certain noises and things are and why the crew do what they do...its nothing to be embarrased about and a very common fear.

I've been flying small planes for years and still sometimes still get butterflies in my stomach when I'm in the back of a big plane and turbulence starts bumping us around. Its the not being in control thing and not being able to see out the front window for me. I do a lot of long distance travel around Australasia where there are often storms and bumpy rides, I just keep telling myself that its just like a car bumping over a dirt road, its the exact same thing really just the wings are going over some "mushy" air.

    Cheers lads,

I have been in small aircraft, I flew from Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar after a night out and Im not kidding when I say I cried all the way, yup big grown up man, had mu hood up and was terrified.

I have flown since a kid and loved it. Had a bad flight in my early 20's from nice to dublin and now hate it. I take valium and xanax now and have seen a doc here who basically told me to believe in Allah and all will be good.

I travel so much and am extremely lucky that I get to fly business most places. In fairness and I dont want to be snobby but that took the edge off, no stress building q's or worrying about getting squashed for 10 hours on a plane but then when I am boarded I just want to get off. I think its a control thing, mixed with claustraphodia. I don't really care if we crash I just want off. Its bull to be honest. I was going to the Lions game in HK this year and went with loads of pals, all was going well until about 5 hours in when I started to have a panic attack, sank another load of pills and hung on for dear life.

When I get home I need to see someone I guess. I cant get doped up if im flying with my daughter at home.

Just had a look at the fear of flying website and that tapping technique is done here but I never thought of doing it, I will give it a go. thank you.

I just check my etihad account and I have done just over 130,000 miles with them in the last 1.5/2 years (mainly business so I dont know the actual miles), I did a trip to HK and Dublin with Emirates, KLM from Abu Dahbi to Washington and back (via schipol), then a few hops around the middle east with work/rugby.

I fly so bloody much and it wears me out doing it. By the time I land, if I am on holiday, I then just think abut the flight back, cant have a drop of booze 48 hours before a flight as the hang over make s me sketchy.

Pakistan airways plane had a landing gear fail a few weeks back here, I can see the runway from my office, its about 150m away. I guess that doenst help, or I am hoping it will desensitize it for me.

Anyway, jet airlines is the next challenge, lets see if I can muster up the nuts to enjoy a holiday.

I'd put my foot down there! The Maldives versus Kerala?! I've been to both and without sugar coating it.... Kerala is the biggest sh1t ridden dump that I've ever had the misfortune of being in.
It's a bit like saying "never mind that weekend in a hotel spa in Barbados, let's spend the time in a B&B in Moyross"

Seriously.. Talk her out of it.
