Fact or Myth - Moving out means you'll definitely get a Student Grant

    Hey all,

I've gotten a lot of good advice from this board so I wanted to see if anyone can help me with something that's been plaguing my mind for some time. This year I wasn't applicable for the SUSI student grant, not even partially, because of my parent's earnings. My parent's are struggling with mortgage repayments so I've had to pay my own way by gouging my personal savings.

I've heard from numerous people that if you're out of home for a long enough time that your parent's income is no longer taken into consideration. My own savings won't be enough to see me through my second year so I was wondering if moving out would allow me to receive a grant and push my way through.

I realise that there are a lot of 'myths' in relation to student grants and schemes so I just wanted to get some opinions off of people who may have been in the same boat as me in the past.

I don't think so. I think it has to be an exceptional circumstance (like if you were legally removed from them for some reason, etc), otherwise you have to be over 23 I think before they stop accounting for your parent's incomes when it comes to your grants :/
I could be wrong but as far as it was explained to me that's how the system works I think :/

    Its a myth

You can't be considered independent until you are over 23 or perhaps if you are under 23 you have to be irreconcilably estranged

Also (I think you are in 2nd year) - once you enter college you enter under the status of dependent if you are living with your parents. You cannot change the status of dependent to independent unless there has been a break of 3 years in study.

So it is absolutely a myth.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
