    Hi all,

Recently changed the plugs on my 2001 Toyota Avensis 1.6 VVTi. The plugs that went into it are Denso k16r-u11. How long until these should be changed again?

    Cheers

The service schedule for mine is every 60000 miles according to the manual but if the car is burning oil that wont be as long.

    If they're irridium plugs: about 60k - 70k miles.
    If they're standard plugs: about 18k - 24k miles.

If you don't know the difference, the non-technical way of telling is that standard plugs will cost €5 or less each, irridium will cost €15 or more each.

I got a set of 4 NGK Iridium plugs from eBay UK via Parcel Motel for €35 (incl. €3.50 Parcel Motel fee).

There are 2 types of iridium plugs one looks like a normal plug and does last ages. And there is a performance version that has a tiny tip. They last the same as a std plug.

Myself id do std plugs every 10-12k miles. There cheap and can make such a difference

I change mine at every service, which I do at half or less of the manufacture's recommended mileage. Cheap as chips after trade discount so I just put new ones in.

Would a car like that not be better off with platinum plugs rather than iridium? Im only basing this on what I have been told, so it might not be entirely accurate, but when pricing plugs for my car I was told that platinum will cost somewhere in the region of €50 for a set and will last maybe 80k km, whereas iridium plugs would cost twice that and last half as long, and that the iridium plugs are only beneficial for real performance driving.

Personally I dont believe any plugs are effective for that long

I wouldn't go neither iridium nor platinum (not for A to B car). 5x dearer (ir. or pl.) plugs won't go 5x longer than normal (copper) ones.

    K16R-U11 costs 2.5 euro each.

Once a year change will give peace of mind and will not drain a wallet. ;)

They were fairly blackened, but not past it. It was my understanding that previous owner had fitted long-lasting ones, and they probably didn't need doing for another 9 or 10k. Burning a biteen, but she was recalled at about 70,000 under the toyota recall. Shes on 214,000 now.

Yeah these are just standard plugs. €12ish for the 4.

Ok thank you. I'm planning on changing oil & filter every 6,000 so I'll change plugs every second go.

Thanks for all your help guys :D

I wouldnt change the plugs regularly as you could strip the cylinder head and its a waste of labour anyway. The manufacturers of decent plugs rate them generally at 40k miles+.
I would just buy the recommended long life plug for said car and follow the dealer service schedule for them. Generally Ngk are better than Denso . Ngk have a recommended plug for most cars on their website.
I think platinum are the better of the 3 plugs -copper, irridium, platinum from when I looked into it.

Dont be silly only way to strip a head is cross threading or over tightening.

And the top plug is iridium .6mm tips. Question is do ya need them.

As I sed I use ngk std and change often

There is absolutely no need to change plugs at every service or at 10-12k miles. What you are throwing out have plenty of life left in them.
