Ford focus break down, help needed!

    Was driving home and when I was slowing down and about to go down a gear the car would chug forwards a bit. Happened a few times. Then as I was slowing down in slow traffic it cut out. Started it up again and 10 minutes later in slow traffic it cut out again. It made a brave effort to start up again but didn't. Sounded like the battery was completely dead second time I tried to start it.
    I know its difficult to know whats wrong without seeing it but any ideas?

    Battery and alternator are reasonably easy to check yourself; if you haven't got one, pick up or borrow a multimeter (from about €4 in Maplins; dead handy to have around). Set it to DC volts (usually indicated by two parallel horizontal lines lines).
    Put the red end on the positive terminal of your battery, the black end on the negative or any large bit of unpainted chassis (ground).
    With the car off, a heathy battery should read somewhere north of 12.5V, higher is better.
    With the engine running, and the accelerator pressed, higher, about 14V or so.

    If the number when stopped is low; the battery is discharged, probably because the alternator isn't charging it. If, after getting a jump, the voltage doesn't increase when the throttle is engaged, the alternator is probably sick.
    Could be any number of things, but you could eliminate those as possibles yourself.
