The short answer is yes never buy a car without having it checked out first.

It passing nct recently is good but nct doesn't check for worn engine parts/belts and similar things.
So although a fresh nct is a good thing it's still best to have a mech check it out.

Wouldn't touch a bora with several barge poles glued together. Horrible wreck of a yoke !

To be honest, even getting a mechanic to give it a once over mightn't reveal an awful lot. I mean, there's only so much they can do by giving it a butchers and maybe a test drive. The mech could give it the all clear tomorrow and it could blow up the following week.

The best way to gauge whether a car is more likely to be kosher or not is by sussing out the seller and seeing whether you feel they're honest and decent. There's a huge element of luck involved in such purchases that no mechanic can cover.

Forget the mechanic and just go with your gut is my advice.

Wouldn't totally agree with this while there is certainly a large element of luck involved in buying a second hand car an experienced mechanic can pick up on quiet a bit from a test drive and a look over. While there are no guarantees I think it would be best have a mechanic check it. Just my opinion.

No but if they're genuine they'll give you an honest assessment of the car. I guess its no more a guarantee than if the mechanic gives it a thumbs up, the car is going to be good.

I could be wrong of course. Maybe you should always have a mechanic check out a second hand car before you buy it. I've bought a few cars in my life but not many, therefore I'd bow to the superior knowledge of most guys on here who really know their stuff - like Dirty Dan above and possibly yourself JohnnyBoy.

The seller could be as honest as they come and give you their honest assessment of the car. The thing is though, unless the seller is a fully qualified mechanic themselves their assessment doesn't hold much water Imo. The amount of times i've been told (even by honest sellers)that the car was good only to find the car to be not as described upon inspection.

now I do agree with some aspects of your post. A mechanic might not find every issue with a car because in these situations 9 times out of 10 they won't be able to have the car on a lift for a full inspection.

However they will still be able to spot faults that the untrained eye usually isn't able to pick up so if you have access to a mechanic bringing them along with you is highly recommended. Imo.
