    Hi,

Planning to build my new pc with new parts and some old from my existing. I am going AMD for the first time. Will the lack of PCIE 3.0 for amd be a problem going forward? Should I pay extra and go for intel?

    Thanks

Sorry, hope these links work. New system will be a Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and I'm taking hard disk (Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 - 3TB), DVD-RW and Monitor from my old system. I will also be taking my old GeForce 9500GS (slow I know!) pcie graphics card. New items will be:

    AMD FX-8350 Eight-Core
    ASUS M5A97 R2.0 - Socket AM3+ - ATX
    Kingston HyperX Genesis 8GB - PC3-12800 - DIMM
    Cooler Master Storm Enforcer case
Samsung 840 Evo Series 250GB SDD

I'm half thinking of taking the power unit from my old system too. It's a basic 450w unit or should I think of upgrading to the likes of the Cooler Master B600 - 600 Watt. I don't intend doing any serious gaming and won't be overclocking etc. Do I need the extra wattage?

What are the main purposes of the pc?

I don't think 8350's are good value at all and they eat power. A 6300 is just as good for gaming and a xeon E3 1230v2 is better for everything for the same price and uses less than half the power.

    You should fill this in.

    1. What is your budget? [€xxx]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [Gaming/Video editing/3D Modelling/HTPC/Internet] (If gaming include which games)

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes/No]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [Hard drive/DVD Drive/Case/PSU/etc.] (If possible state brand and model of the parts to ensure compatibility)

    5. Do you need a monitor? [Yes/No]

5a. If yes, what size do you need. [19'/20'/22'/24'/etc.]

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [Yes/No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.]

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [Yes/No]

    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser]

    9. When are you purchasing? [In x days]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [South Dublin City/Cork City/Kerry/etc.]

Thanks BloodBath. I'm having a look at the xeon now. If I go with Intel it will answer my initial question. Answers to your questions below:

    1. What is your budget? [€650 max (not including a new graphics card which i plan to purchase later). This is for cpu, motherboard, case, memory, SDD and possibly a new psu]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [small bit of Gaming - not the latest games and if I do get a newish game I won't be too pushed about the running speed etc. once it runs ok/Video editing/Internet/small bit of development/Watching Movies etc. (HD)]

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [No - have win 7 pro 64 bit on the way]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [Hard drive/DVD Drive/Case/PSU/etc.] (If possible state brand and model of the parts to ensure compatibility). Yes I can use the following:
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 - 3TB
    Samsung Super WriteMaster DVD-RW
GeForce 9500GS pcie (until I can get a better one)
Old Dell flatscreen Monitor (very old - will be replacing in the next 6 months along witn graphics card)

    5. Do you need a monitor? [No]

5a. If yes, what size do you need. [19'/20'/22'/24'/etc.]

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [Yes - see 4 above. Hope to replace graphics card and monitor in next siz months and aiming for 1920x1080]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.] No

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [No]

    8. How can you pay? [Credit Card]

    9. When are you purchasing? [In next 10 days]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [South Dublin City/Cork City/Kerry/etc.] Hopefully should be ok.

How's this? Are you doing much video editing? You might not need 16gb of ram.

What is your old psu? It will probably be ok if you want to get the 250gb ssd. I'd be wary of it if it's some cheap generic thing though.

Thanks for this BloodBath. It's given me a lot to think about. Just one question. If I'm not going to do any overclocking, will the stock cooler do for the Xeon?

It will but it's fairly crap and noisey. It might struggle under load on hot days as well.

Read my PM :) It might be a better deal for you. Maybe not as much if you are into video editing, though. Best ask here first.
