Firefox fonts turned ugly

I'm not sure how or exactly when this happened but in the last couple of days the fonts in Firefox and another couple of applications have gone kind of ugly.

It's hard to describe exactly but if you look at the rightmost part of the letter m in the attached screenshot it shows an example of what I mean.

There's just a lot of unsmooth lines really. I tried messing about with the antialising settings in Xubuntu but it didn't really do much.

Fonts look great in all apps in the guest account. Any easy way of copying the font config from the guest a/c to my own?

Ive had this before, been a long time since I used FF, but the nonsensical fix for me at the time was toggle hardware acceleration check box, under advanced tab in FF options :)

Yeah, tried it but it didn't do much. I think I might redo my whole theme from scratch and try figure out in the process which element affects the font settings.

I deleted ~/.fonts.conf and changed my default system font to the Ubuntu one and it's all a lot prettier now.
