Ferry Cancelled - Can I Get A Refund?

I bought a Sail & Rail ticket from Arriva Trains Wales but Irish Ferries have cancelled the Swift. They've made provision to put everyone on Ulysses but this travels at awkward times of the day and night and I would need to pay for a hotel in Holyhead (basically doubling my cost). Does anyone know if I can get a refund from Arriva Trains Wales so that I can go via Stenaline instead?

Google my friend, has the answer to everything.

    Please note:
Buying Online: SailRail / Arriva Trains Wales working in conjunction with The Trainline are pleased to offer you the facility to buy your rail tickets online. Tickets purchased via this site will be provided by The Trainline, and not SailRail / Arriva Train Wales. Therefore, should you have any problems, please contact The Trainline directly

    Also the FAQ section

    I didn’t use my SailRail ticket – Can I get a refund?

If you have purchased a SailRail Advance Ticket, there are no refunds. However, where a ferry operator cancels a service due to inclement weather, an exception may be made.

If you have purchased a SailRail Single Ticket, you can get a refund subject to a £10 administration fee on unused tickets surrendered up to 28 days after the expiry of the ticket.

    I fecking love Google :)

Thanks, I tried googling too but didn't come up with that. Even when I put in the heading of what you found it didn't show up.

That £10 admin fee is a cheek, its not my fault the thing was cancelled, though I suppose it was in the infamous small print. The 'may' is also a little unclear. A refund 'may' be made? Does that mean they'll only make it if they feel like it?

Thanks though, at least it looks like I can do it and have a case for a refund.

I rang Arriva Trains Wales and they said they can't refund it, that the service provider is Irish Ferries and that I have to ask them for a refund. I spent a good twenty minutes on the phone trying to explain how (a)its not my fault if a ferry doesn't go; (b)Irish Ferries aren't going to do anything because I booked it through Arriva Trains Wales.

Irish Ferries office is now closed.

If I book to go with Stenaline anyway and then try to argue my point afterwards does anyone know if there should be legislation in place to make my case stronger? Its ridiculous if a company can sell a travel solution then wring its hands if it goes pear-shaped.

I remember i missed the Stena boat once as my trian was late the I went up to the Stena Line desk in Holyhead and explained the situation and asked if they could transfer me to the Irish Ferries Swift they pointed me in the direction of the train ticket desk in the station and the nice man there transfered me free of charge on the IF ferry. So its doable
