Trial period and pay

I was asked to do some weekend work for a company Id applied for a job with. I was not told this was a trial at the time. The second day I worked was a Sunday and I was essentially left to work alone.

When I had finished I called the employer and was told they would be in touch. I called several times in the following week and was either ignored or fobbed off until today when I was told it had been a trial and I would not actually be paid for the work I did. I would only be paid for petrol costs incurred. (I know the work I did was used).

What are my rights here? Is this legal? I worked all together about 7 hours spaced over 2 days.

I believe it's probably illegal - but of course we cannot give legal advice here, and a lawyer would cost more than you should have been paid.

If you can, go and visit Citizen's Information. They can sometimes be good at calling employers and conveying a message in a way that gets work-trials paid.
