Do you have to pay to signup for societies? Or is it just some of them that have a membership fee? And if you do pay, around how much would it be?

You pay to join each society/club. Prices vary (anything from 2 to 6 euro is normal) and membership is normally renewed every year (e.g. you'll have to rejoin next Freshers Week/Refresher Week). Larger societies like the Phil or Hist have 4 year memberships.

The membership fee enables you to attend all events except in the case of some sports clubs which have discounted classes instead of training sessions, and some ticketed events of societies (some of the more famous guests of the Phil are normally ticketed events, they're free but you won't be guaranteed a ticket as places are limited).
