it has been pretty sore for the last couple of weeks and has coincided with an increase in my LSR mileage over the same period (15,16 and 18 miles today).
i'm not in agony or anything like that but it is throbbing since my run this morning which i haven't noticed before.
i suppose my main worry is am i at risk of the nail coming off totally and if so would that put me out of action for a while?
is there anything i can do to stop the nail from coming off?

tbh, the nail coming off ain't that bad a thing. If a nail has grown under it then it can be taken off. It will be tender (don't want anyone stamping on your foot) but you will have little pain on LSRs. If you are gearing up for say DCM then you should get this done sooner rather than later. You should go to a good doctor to look at this. I go to a sports doc and he has done this for me a few times. I peal them off myself now but I have not had one in a while. :D There is basically 10 secs of pain to get a nail removed and it not that much. Much more pain from doing a LSR on it.

I remember my big toenail coming off as I came up by belfield. I could feel it in my shoe for the last few miles. Didn't hurt but certainly wasn't pleasant.

They are more sore when they are on and hurting.
