Yes you do need a student travel card for all student tickets in Dublin - be it Dublin Bus, LUAS or Irish Rail.

You need the Student Travel Card. If caught, you ticket will be confiscated and you fined.

The Student Travel Card does offer lots of discounts and can be used as a Leap Card.

Usually the colleges have discount offers on Student Travel Cards during Freshers Week or the like. Otherwise it's 15 euro.

Also note that the STC is also a Leap card. So if you use your Rambler for the bus, you can still load money onto the card for use on Luas or Dart (or the bus of course). Dead handy if you're stuck of a rainy winters evening.

No, the rules are quite clear on this. you must have a student travelcard to use the student rambler ticket.

I know Dublin Bus don't do regular checks but I'd say Monday morning would be ideal to catch students without the STC.

    Not exactly true.

In 2012, there were over 183,000 tickets checked and over 7,100 standard fares issued.

It tends to be fairly focussed.
