Has anyone any idea when the new MacBookPro retina display will be out?

Probably the end of next month alongside Mavericks.

YOu think? I don't think we'll see new Retinas this year, as they were upgraded (albeit slightly) in March. I think regular Pro's will be upgraded to Haswell.

Regular pros to Haswell, agreed. iMac should see a bump too. And, of course, the Mac Pro. If that comes with a 4K display, I will be all over that.

rMPBs, if not October, then likely Spring.

They aren't going to update the regular Pros with Haswell and not the Retinas. The opposite is more likely.

Best Buy in the US have reduced macbooks prices by about $200 indicating they are clearing old stock to make room for the new macbook

Worth noting that PC World were told by Apple they could discount the rMBPs about a month ago. Just remembered that now!

Need a new machine, so torn. I'll see what the refreshed iMacs are like.

Along the same lines as I read somewhere else. I think they are looking to phase out the non-Retna MBP's

A friend is looking at getting a rMBP when they refresh. He's not sure if he should get 8 or 16 GB of ram. As he doesn't use it for any heavy work so I'd recommended sticking with 8 and saving the money for a bigger HD. He thinks 16GB may be useful in the future. I'm thinking his mac will be replaced before 16 is required (more the 5 years off). What do you think?

I'm of the opinion you can never have too much RAM. Unfortunately with the rMBPs it's soldered to the mobo so you have to pay Apple's inflated prices. Probably the best bet would be to save on the ram and stump up for an SSD.

If he can afford 16 he should get 16. It is possible to replace the SSD but not the RAM. 8GB is grand at the moment but it won't be in 3 years time. That 8GB could be the difference between him choosing when to upgrade to a new machine and being forced to.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree, especially with the RAM being fixed. But if you're not someone who is not a heavy multitasker, I'm not sure if you'll get any use of RAM over 8gb. Photoshop CS3 ran on 1GB in 2008, fast forward to CS4 and CS5, they still only look for 1GB.

Just bought one, definitely go for a 16 Ram, its not upgradeable.

But is the decision as simple as "how much RAM should I get"? The 13" rMBP only comes with 8gb, no option to up it to 16gb. If you want 16 you either have to buy the 15" or the regular MBP

Yes, as far as I can see, in RAM, you get what you get, no options on the rMBP

Yeah, you are stuck with 8GB on the 13-inch. But I’d be reasonably hopeful the Haswell models will have a 16GB option.

While I'm hopeful for the same, the general consensus on macrumors is that the memory sizes won't change

I'd say you're looking at 50/50 odds the base level ram will change in the lower 13" model tbh. Haswell well worth waiting for in the Macbook range though.

SSD makes a huge performance leap even over ram, I've 8gb and video editing, photo retouching are a breeze, Photoshop CS6 in particular is lightening quick, I'm a pro user and have been using and repairing macs more than 20 years now (started on a SE30 and IIx) and the air I'm using after careful consideration is a demon especially when working in the CS suite.
