    Hi Guys

Friend of mine gave me a water softener that he wasn't using but I'm unsure on which way the treated and untreated water is to be connected??

It may be an old model. I found this: http://www.water-softeners-filters.com/media/pdf/5600%20Service%20Manual%2040106.pdf

    It looks the same.
    Also look through: http://www.water-softeners-filters.com/pentair-user-manuals

I can't see the photos on the OP, and it looks like if it is Pentair you have read off a label from the system, make sure this is not just on the blue pressure vessel, (the code of which would be referring more so to the code of the vessel).

If you describe it as having a mechanical clock dial and a bit like ET's head (that wee alien) then its more likely to be a Pentair controlled 5600 valve (timer model) - or one of the many, many Chinese copies such as Maruyama, Canature, etc.

If it has a mechanical clock dial and has a lift off oblong (but irregular squarish) black plastic top cover revealing the dial below, then it is likely to be an Autotrol 255 440 control valve (timer model).

The 5600 model would be water in - back right.

The 255 440 model would be water in - back left.
