Anyone know what time you can buy alcohol in shops I.e Tesco and Supervalu etc. I heard they only start selling after a certain time? Is this true? And what time if so?

If you do an online shop then alcohol can only be delivered within the above hours.

Just to note, these are permitted hours of sale, they do not have to sell between these hours. Many pubs open later than the legal requirement, and some close earlier too.

e.g. many supermarkets will cordon off areas early or late. If you went up at 9.55pm with drink they could refuse the sale, just as they could refuse the sale of a pack of biscuits.

Yeah, we're talking about shops/supermarkets here tho, not pubs.

exact same thing though, they do not have to sell between those hours, some might think its obvious, though some might get irate and start harping on about non-existent "legal rights" to some poor girl on a till.

Lol. Right but you were talking about pubs which are a totally different story.

Anyways, yeah, you're right, they don't HAVE to sell but most places especially franchise chains like Centra will sell it between these hours and it's why they sell it in the first place, that's how they make their money. So, I can't see why they wouldn't sell it between the legal hours unless you were under-age or intoxicated already.

    Whats the difference?

There was a supervalu near me years ago who had a separate offie section with shutters, they were often not open early, presumably there was not enough demand early on to warrant opening it and staffing it. You would see people waiting around for it to open.

The difference is, legal selling hours for public houses and legal selling hours for the retail sector are different.

I would presume everybody knows that. If you now admit the only difference is the times I don't see how you would describe that as being "totally different", I would have said they are VERY similar. Now I honestly have no idea what you were going on about.

i.e. I still have no idea why you quoted this, (with no mention of time)

the Supervalu near me is the same, they have a separate offy and they don't stay open until 10pm, I think the close by 9pm. Not sure what time the open, although I think they are open by 10.30am.
