    Hi,

I'm going to look at a 520 auto '01 BMW. What's a fair price for one of those.
It has 110,000 miles on the clock, just passed NCT.

Lets presume it's in good nick what price they going for.

model wise I think it's standard enough, no leather seats or anything like that.

    Thanks..

About €1,100 I'm thinking. Is it the 2.0 litre or 2.2 litre?

below 2k for sure... they are pigs on the fuel around town and in general to be honest, particularly in an auto...

    It's the 2ltr

The only thing that keeps E39's heads above the €2500 mark is a sport package, low miles and good spec combined.

If it has none of these things, it'll never be worth more than €1500.

Thanks, I'm gonna have a look at it and if I can get it for under that I might just take it.

Very odd for a 2.0ltr to be 2001.They ended in 2000 .I would check the engine number with registration book. The new facelift model has slightly different light clusters and some other stuff.Good hunting.Mileage is low.

At that mileage, has the suspension been checked out, control arms etc.
Ask about the thermostat, rad, hoses and fluids have they been changed
    at any stage.
Google CCV e39 520i, check if that is blocked.
Ask what rate its burning oil, they all do.
They are a great car at a cheap price. If all the above are sorted your onto a winner. If they are not, the costs mount up very fast.
Having a NCT and full service history is still no guarantee of the above problems.

If you can, get a mechanic who knows BMWs.
If you ask the seller the questions above , you will have a fair idea how well
    they maintained the car.

Buy with your head not your heart, you can easily put in the purchase price on repairs.

It all depends how long you want the car for, best of luck

Very very hard to pin it down. Roughly about 1k but a set of desirable m-par wheels with very good tyres could nearly double that. An M-sport car (looks better, rides harshly and adds nothing to performance) could be worth twice what a base model is worth

That's just a few examples. The value of the car is very much in how desirable the car is in the eyes of a potential buyer..

In fairness you're in minefield territory. E39s have high quality interiors and wear well. The petrol engines are also very reliable. However at over 10 years old, the suspension and cooling system will be very much worn out.

It's not quite that bad in fairness. I recently put my E39 through the Nct and found them excellent for identifying worn links and bushes. Granted there could be weaknesses in the cooling system but in 40k miles mine had zero cooling issues. My mechanic was able to source nearly new parts from a breakers for very reasonable cost and the car is now in tip top condition mechanically. If you have access to a good Indy mechanic that uses scrapyards you can keep one on the road handy enough as there are plenty scrapped at this stage from which to source parts.

I have my local mechanic looking at this morning, and if I can get some money off it after it checks out I'll give it a go. It might only be for a short while.

I'll let ya know how it goes..

You have no idea what the car should be performing like suspension wise until you replace it (with original parts i might add). Ive only had to replace my thermostat so far at 110k miles too, but am under no illusions that all cooling components need to be replaced.

If you're replacing cooling or suspension components from a breakers yard, you're mad in the head.

here is one with the same spec asking 950 to give you an idea of what they are worth, the ones

(as has been mentioned a nice m sport, even with the same spec interior, will go for about twice the price of a realistically priced poor spec, non m sport...

I stayed away from the BMW in the end. I read a few other threads here and it just wasn't selling itself to me. Thanks for the help lads.
I got an '03 Accord exec, 77k on the clock...I love it.

    Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,226 ✭✭✭Stallingrad

Amazing that the E39, considered the best exec in the world for years, even when the e60 was out can be bought for so little. The 2.0 auto will be slow and thirsty, the 2.2 is better on both counts but unlike the 2.0 has a thirst for oil, combine this with a poor cooling system and you have a recipe for cooked engines, so get everything checked out by someone who knows what to look for.

They're still a great car even now and if you have a good indy mechanic they can be kept going quite reasonably.
My 520i has 150k miles on it, uses zero oil and has required nothing other than wear and tear items in the last 40k miles.
While it's off the road for now I'll probably convert it to LPG in the medium term and put another 50-100k miles on it.
IMO they are a great car for comfort vs overall running costs if you're not too worried about having something shiny and up to date.
