Can Any of you guys recommend a cost effective, simple to use, sole trader software package ? need it to invoice, create vat return (Vat3) and not neccessarily a payroll section? also to input supplier invoices.

Was using Tas but not a fan of it, any suggestions are welome.

In my opinion tas is as good as it gets. If you have paid for it then the ry and stick it out. If you don't like it you won't like sage. Maybe quickbooks.
There are a lot of online packages becoming popular. Look at www.surfaccounts.com www.xero.com or big red book online also.

Also not a fan of TAS find it very difficult to follow. I find SAGE the easiest to use and understand. As far as I know you can get a basic version for a reasonable price.
Another option is "big red book" like the name says it is very similar to the old days of manually doing accounts in a red ledger, quite a few of our clients use this package and they would have very little accounts experience.

See if these companys would allow you to trial their demo data

Sage line 50 would be my first choice for ease of use and cost. For 175 I don't think you will get better. Big red books isnt great. If you want online xero.com or sortmybooks.ie but they cost around 30 a month

I was in the same boat a couple of weeks ago. I found manager.io it's free and I'm finding excellent so far. My accountant is happy with it also. Doesn't seem to be much about it on when you google it.

Sorry, just retread your original post. I'm not sure about it doing vat returns as I'm not yet registered for VAT.
