Hi folks, just looking for a bit of advice here. Currently looking for a house in South Dublin, we have been bidding on a place in Kimmage which ticks nearly all the boxes in terms of location etc and we really like the house. Myself and my partner currently don't have kids but we are purchasing a house based on staying there for 10 years plus. Without trying to sound a bit stuck up we aren't too happy about the prospect of our kid going to one of the schools in the catchment area of Kimmage, i.e Crumlin, walkinstown area. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. From my understanding if I wanted my kid to go to a school in say Terenure then we would have to apply to all the schools around there but it is a lottery as to whether our kid would get in or not

If you want a guaranteed school in Terenure buy in Terenure! Have a friend who the did just that (parkmore drive) and it was very expensive but it worked.

It does seem a bit weird that you're happy to live in kimmage but not for your hypothetical children to be educated there. We are talking primary and I think the consensus is that unless its a disaster of a school it's best for children to be educated at the school nearest to them.

Pick your secondary school maybe and find out the feeder schools in the kimmage area.

Its not really a lottery for school places in most cases. The ETs are generally whoever puts their name down first gets a place.
When it comes to catholic schools children in the parish generally get prioritised over children outside the parish. So your address could very well rule you out of a school you want.
Every school has an enrollment policy and in most cases these are on the schools website. Might be worth checking out these before you make your decision.

You need to literally read all the enrollment and admissions policies in the local schools. (And keep in mind they do change!)
I have heard st Pius x is hard to get into and can ask for a utility bill for proof of address to make sure you are in the parish! (Not all roads in terenure are in the parish!) I have heard it is a great school.
I think this is a feeder school for our ladys girls school (which is meant to be a lovely school) and templeogue college for boys.

I don't know anything about st Joseph's in the village but know of people (years and years ago) not living in terenure getting in but maybe times have changed. I don't know anything on the girls presentation primary school
But have heard bad reports on the secondary school.

I presume there isn't a problem getting into terenure college junior school, it starts in 2nd class and is fee paying. There is a fee paying montesorri primary on the grounds from junior infants to 1st class.

My kids go to st josephs in terenure but they did go to st damians and they are both fairly simular schools, apart from the parking which is a nightmare in st josephs, i would rather a mixeds school though. I am from the catchment area but couldnt get into st pius, got a place in st josephs easy enough. I too would not send my kids to certain schools. so st agnes and st peters and harolds x national would be ruled out for me as I just dont like the way the older kids behave coming out of the school. I think it says a lot for the school if the older kids are cursing on their way out. Bishop Shanahans is also a excellent school and not as hard to get into. Good luck in your new home.
