Its an edox watch from around 1981 it has a number 200437 stamped on the back.I just took a few quick pics on my phone , we nearly died when we seen the cost of a new edox watch, we have no desire to sell it more curiosity

That's not too shabby and a nice thing to remember him by. It's likely that the case is gold-plated given that it appears to have a stainless steel back. More about the brand here (You may need to stick the second link through a translation tool - I certainly did).
