volkswagen caddy gearbox

The gearbox in the old mans caddy is gone according to his mechanic. He lives in Meath would anyone know where within about a couple of hours drive he would get a second hand replacement? Or would he be better off getting the one in his own van reconditioned? Would anyone have a clue what a second hand gearbox would cost…

Or would he be better off getting the one in his own van reconditioned? Would anyone have a clue what a second hand gearbox would cost or the cost of reconditioning be?
The van is a 2 litre caddy sdi non turbo version, thanks in advance.

A 2nd hand gearbox will be hard to find, and they go for around the 500 euro mark, give or take 100 depending on the millage on it.
As for a recon one, It depends on how bad his own box is, Is it just whining or grinding going into gears? or Is after breaking something inside it?
