Hey , I have an appointment in Monaghan on the 27th and I need to get back to Dublin for six , I've made the trip already but the 03.20 bus never showed and another commuter told me that it's not unusual for that to happen. I really need to make it back to Dublin and I'm worried that the bus could be a no show again , does anybody know what the story is with this bus?. Thanks.

There is no 03:20 departure - there is an 03:15 departure and a 15:20 departure, the latter being the one that I think you are referring to.

As I said in another thread, when talking about transport, it tends to help that you use the 24 hour clock!

Both are route 32 services from Letterkenny so I would be very surprised if they did not operate, unless there was a mechanical defect on the bus. Perhaps it was running late?

What was the reason given the first time? Given you would have been at the bus station, they must have explained it.

If it's the 15.20 journey from Monaghan to Dublin (which originates in Letterkenny) it is possible that it could have been running a bit late due to traffic en route.

The ticket office will be able to advise or find out. Also there's usually an inspector on duty at Monaghan bus station.

If there's an issue with a particular service the contact details for Bus Éireann by post, e-mail and phone are here (towards bottom of page).

    Hope this helps.

Sorry , yeah I meant the 15.20 it didn't show the last time I was there and another passenger rolled his eyes and said that sometimes it didn't show and you have to wait for next bus.

I've been trying to phone Monaghan bus station for two days and I can't get through. Bus Eireann head office confirmed the time for me already. I'll flip if it doesn't show as I've postponed the appointment I have twice already.

    when is your appointment?
I say that because theres a bus to Cavan at 15:40 and it should make the connection to Dublin to have you in just before 7 - should the Leterkenny bus not come.

BTW, did you not think of asking the inspector in Monaghan station what the story was?
If a bus was cancelled then he should be the first to know.

I am finding this a bit hard to understand.

If you were boarding in Monaghan, then surely the staff/inspector there would have been able to tell you what happened on that occasion.

The bus is supposed to operate every day - if it didn't operate on a regular basis then I think that we'd know about it. Just because some guy said something along those lines doesn't mean it's true.

What do you expect to find out from BE in Monaghan? That they decide to cancel it at a whim? Or that a scheduled expressway service maybe broke down on one occasion?

The bus ought to operate. It is an Intercity service. That's the bottom line.

Is there a bus from Derry you could catch instead?

I'm not sure what difference it makes whether it comes from Derry or Letterkenny - the fact remains that it should operate.

The OP has still not explained whether he asked the on-duty inspector in the bus station why the bus apparently did not operate and what reason was given.

I just find it very difficult to believe that the coach did not operate without a very good reason, such as a breakdown.

When I got to Monaghan bus station originally there was somebody at the ticket/info desk but when I was going back to Dub there was nobody at the desk when I went in and I got fed up going inside the building to check so I just resigned myself to getting the next bus. It might have someting to do with the fact that nobody seems to answer the phone either.

The reason I wanted to speak to the Monaghan bus station directly is because I wanted the local skinny on the bus , this is Ireland after all and sometimes these things don't exactly run by the book as in they could be contracting to a private company that's not too reliable. The appointment is for six so if the 15.20 does show it's perfect to get back on time.

There should be an inspector on duty at each bus station - in an event like this, search him out.

Either way, the bus ought to operate unless something dramatic happens, such as a breakdown. BE are not in the habit of scheduling buses that don't operate.

I haven't experienced the issue that the OP reports either, just some lateness over the years. I was trying to point out that there are other buses and my experience is that the Goldliners are generally more punctual. Faster too.

When I recently travelled from Donegal to Dublin there were roadworks in Emyvale that caused a lot of disruption. Perhaps this is still the case? A phone call to Monaghan Bus Station or to Bus Eireann should answer the OP's question in any case.

I've never known long distance services to be just cancelled without a substitute. Even when I worked for DCS, if there was a problem with breakdowns on routes such as 65 or 66, and a replacement wasn't readily available, a universal would be substituted or a bus would be taken off one of the shorter routes to cover it.

People waiting at the bus park in Carlow often think the bus has gone already or is not coming as it is late so often by up to 40minutes. The 2.10pm and 4.10pm buses are the worst and usually don't arrive in Carlow until after half past the hour.

Bus didn't arrive until 3.45 and didn't leave until around 3.55 , nobody apologised and it was just accepted as normal. There was a guy who looked like an inspector ( maybe they're reading Boards? ) and he left just after 15.20. I was late for my appointment and was running around like a blue arse fly trying to get there. The bus to Monaghan was also a 15-20 yr old wagon that seemed to have sweat form the 90's still in the seats and the air con wasn't working.

Also went to get the bus to Carlow on Saturday night , the bus was rushed by Cork fans going to Waterford , ( did they leave the cars in Waterford or do they live on the border? ) and the people going to Carlow were left on the footpath!!. Why didn't they put an extra bus on when they knew there was going to be extra passengers?. Sick of Bus Eireann I'll be trying to avoid them as much as I can from now on.

They never answer there phone,I among other people have complained but nothing gets done. Bottom line they get heavily subsidised by the Government so they couldn't give a rats ass about people as they will get paid either way,
not just a problem in Monaghan but also the rest of the country.Just another poor service in this backwards country i'm afraid.
