I have a Volkswagen Polo and when I go to start the car I turn the key car starts but just as I let the key go back it makes a gridding noise. But then if I am driven it for a while stop and start again it does not make this sound. Does anyone know when this could be.

Could this be the starter going, if so sound I get this replace as soon as or could I leave it for a while as I am broke

    Thanks

Yeah sounds to me like the starter is sticking a bit after starting the car.

You dont need to replace it. If you are handy with tools you can take it out yourself and grease it up.

ye i just took mine apart and greased it up. Still fine six months later. A reconditioned one would be over about a 100 euro I think. New about 150. Wouldn't bother with a scrap one.

How too diy replace or fix it here - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=83721756

That's the VAG 'yahoo'. Very common problem.

My allroad has been doing that for well over a year. I never bothered doing anything about it and it's no worse.

Straight swap is a handy job so labour shouldn't be too expensive if you ring around a few places.
