Bought car two weekes ago, I signed the log book and the guy I bought the car from posted the log book away this day two weeks ago. I have still not got this back and I am starting to get worried and I can not tax the car until I get it.

Could anyone please let me know if this time frame is about right or how long it should take, or is there any way I can call someone to see if they have got it.

Two weeks isn't overly long to be waiting I've waited longer than that in the past. Did you ask if its actually been posted to shannon. Check the status here

I've had a tax book go missing and it took ages to Straighten out. Nearly six months! But that was when Shannon was a disaster.
If you want to ring Shannon and ask is there much of a back log. That should give an idea if it's got there or not. Previous owner has no real reason to hold onto it

Thanks for that, yea i will wate another week and if not have it by then i will call https://www.motortax.ie/PSE/staticPages.do?content=contact.

Just that i can not tax it until i get it and it has been on the road so if i get stopped they could lift it.

Could the guy who sold it to me keep the log and then say to the cops that it is his and they would belive him as it would have the log

If he sent it then calling to his house won't achieve much. Did you get a receipt at the time of sale? Is everything else in order? Don't panic.

Actual i did not get a receipt, but he was a good enough guy (and he sort of buys and sells cars for a bit of extra money on top of his other job) and the car is grand and he was very nice when i called him about it, the only thing that is making me a bit more worried is that when i put the reg into checking the car it says it is Red color but the car is Black/purple

    just me thinking the worst

How long ago did you buy the car, did shannon say they didn't receive the log book, did you ask the seller if he posted it to shannon.

Yea i got it, it took just over 3 weeks, i would not worry about it, you will get it. As other people said there is no benfit for the seller to keep it, as say u were driven it and got speeding ticket etc it would be in the last owners name.

The only thing was as i bought the car on the 28 Aug i had to pay the tax for the Mt of Aug too.

No that was the problem, i should have conact the tax off ice to say it was going to be off the road, but as i was driven it around in that time i thought it would be better not to have done that incase i was stop and they asked why there was no tax, it was only €22 extra so not too bad.

Next time i buy a car andf it is that close to the Mt i will just get the log booked signed to a forward date

Sorry excuse my ignorance but did you get caught driving with no tax on it just after buying it? if so then they would of left you off iv done this anytime iv just bought a car and there has never been a problem i would then tax it as soon as i got the logbook back but hey your right 22euro is grand to pay off.

No i did not get caught driven with no tax, as the change of ownership was the 28-Aug (this was on log book) and i taxed the car online i had to pay for Aug, i could have told Tax office when i bought the car is was going to be off the road until say Sept i would not have had to pay for Aug. I just did not bother

Wow... That's Wonderful News! :) Yes I agree, that there is no point for seller to kept log book... but when I bought the car the seller told that's wife's car. Hope all will be ok. Thanx

I bought 10 days ago, and seller's phone N# don't work anymore. I have photos made with my phone (log book). Seller told that is wife's car. In Shannon no news, no changes at the moment. :(

I would just give the seller a call or a text and ask what date did they post the Log book and if u have not got it from 4 weeks after that date i would call them again

I wouldn't get worked until a month passes. Very rare you get them back in a fortnight.

I don't understand the last bit of your post when did you speak to the girl owner.
But anyhow i expect you will get the certificate in time as has already been said its no advantage to the seller to hold on to it. Unless of course he forgot to post it away.

It's of no use to the owner, you saw it so it exists. I think maybe your letting your thoughts run away a bit.
I'd say a week, possibly two before I'd be even thinking about it.

im in a similar situ with this log book jargin from a mechanic. im only waiting a week and i dont want to ring him every 5mins to ask him whats the story. my problem is that he had the car a week or so before i bought it from him and hes still waiting to get the book back before i can get my hands on it to sort out. sorta feel like a bit of a fool over my own inexperience but i know where the lad lives and where his garage is. not saying im going down there with the pitchforks just yet lol. just have never been in this situ.

anyways i signed up to this site just to say thanks to the folks posting info on this subject, it has put my mind at ease, well for atleast another week lol

Hi AVFC.Stephen I would not worry about it, it takes them a good while to send it out. So what have you done about the tax on the car as you will have to pay form the date you signed the log book. Like in my case I signed it on the 28 Aug and I had to pay for the whole month of Aug

hi mate. i havent actually signed the log book, as he had the car for so little time that he didnt have the log book himself. he got the car roughly around the 21rst of nov, and thats when the nct has been done on it, when i bought it off him he told me that the log book was still waiting to get exchanged into his name.

so he basicly put the car up for sale on a site and well i had never bought a car before and he gave me a reciept and said yeah it could take a week or 3 for him to get the log book. he seemed genuine and i have no reason to not believe him as i know where he lives and the address of his business but for some reason my head runs wild with this type of situ. so realisticly, i could be waiting 2 months before i can put the car legit on the road. im very happy with the car and well i dont mind paying a months mt if it just gets sorted. tbh i dont even know how to go about changing the car to offroad without sending off the logbook myself....

    Stephen,

To put your mind at ease a little, go to the motortax.ie website and click on 'Vehicle Transaction Query', key in the reg and see if his first change of ownership has been logged with Shannon. Be aware that there may be a back log as well so don't be too alarmed if you don't see it.

Best of luck with the new motor.

i posted on this about a car i bought around xmas. well the mechanic never got the logbook in the end and i had to figure out how to get it myself.

i went to the tax office close to where i live and they didnt really have any information for me, i also went to the local garda station, they were in fairness completelyout of there depth with it lol. infact they thought maybe arresting the previous owner may help lol though it didnt go that far thankfully.

so after ringing the shannon countless amounts of times, sending them emails only to be getting automated emials back that dont answer the question i asked i started to get pretty tired of the whole thing.

i then decided to go down to the local tax office again and they gave me a statuary declaration form which they didnt know about the first time i went down. this particular form i had to bring to a solicitor and also to an opel garage.

the solicitor cost me 10 euro and they stated i had enough proof that i bought the car on the statuary declaration form and signed and stamped it

then off to the opel garage where they checked the chassi number and the engine number. they were free and they didnt actually know why i was bringing them this form and why i was getting it stamped either.....

after doing this i borught it back to the local motor tax office only for the girl behind the counter to say they cant accept this form i have presented as theres a new one and i can only get it from the shannon tourist tax office in clare lol, i mean really?? they dont have a copy of this form and i need to send away for it in the post ?

anyways i was pretty low at this point and i nearly tore up the work i had done on the statuary declaration form, but the missus said just send it off anyways, see if they get back to u, so i did.

4 days later i can see on the website that the car has changed hands, im thinking holy F******* HELL, i was over the moon, but then 4 weeks went past and i still hadnt got the log book.

so i rang them. the woman on the phone said my address and instead of saying Court at the end, she said Road. i said to her that they have put the wrong address on the letter they were sending to me.

now wait for this, she then says

Does it really matter if its Court or Road at the end of the address??

is this what we call professional in this country?? there is loads of people unemployed in the country right now and in all seriousness, is this the best we can come up with in this sector ?? GOD HELP US!!!!!!

anyways, if u buy a car and u are trying to get a log book and like me u cant find a place where it tells u how to get one, follow these steps

    1) go to ur local tax office and ask for a statuary declaration form, if they say no, go back the next day, im sure they will change there mind

    2) fill it out with a solicitor and the car numbers need to be filled in by a offical mechanic and dealership of the car you have.

    3) send it to the shannon, during the next week check the status of the car on motortax.ie to see if its changed hands

    4) ring the shannon in a week to see if they were able to put ur address down correctly on the piece of paper they are sending to you

NEVER AGAIN NEVER A F********* GAIN

If I'm buying a car privately, I just bring a stamped, addressed (to Shannon) envelope with me, and if the deal is done, we fill in the change of ownership section and then both of us would drive to the nearest post box and pop it in.Job done, no worrying and wondering.

the mechanic that i bought the car off swore there was a logbook in the post to him from the previous owner as mechanics usually fix up the cars that they have asap and sell them to get the profit in. though the mechanic never got the logbook as promised from the previous owner...

it really shouldnt of been my problem in the first place but i wasnt sittin around for someone else to get the finger out
