TUF 19 coaches Frankie Edgar and BJ Penn

Don't understand this one at all. Edgar beat him the 1st time and destroyed him the 2nd time! What benefit is there in beating him a 3rd time when, by that stage, he'll have been out of the octagon well over a year and won't have won a fight in 3 years?

The fight will be contested at featherweight, I really don’t see how Penn is making 145 for the fight. He admitted to hating the cut to 155 in the later parts of his career and his last 3 fights were at 170.

Actually pretty gutted for Frankie cos it means he won't get to fight again for what? 9 months? And even when he does fight, he's not fighting a contender so it's not gonna move him up the rankings or anything.

Sounds like they're throwing him a bone. They probably feel he needs a confidence booster and being a coach and a fight against Penn is just that.

Yea I think this is a stupid move tbh. They're using the names more than anything else. They're both highly recognised names in the sport and might draw some numbers but for the final fight, it makes no sense.

There's quite a few match ups lately that I haven't agreed with and this just adds to the list.

BJ is 1-6, he should have retired (stayed retired???).

This has another Carwin - Nelson written all over it, BJ will prob pull out of fight with injury, then retire shortly after it.

One last big payday for him

Really surprised when I heard this. I don't see why Frankie agreed to this, unless he picked up an injury in his last fight and needs some time off. He will devour BJ at any weight, at this stage Penn is unfortunately a tomato can despite being one of the best fighters ever back in his day. Maybe Frankie is just interested in stepping up his coaching game, but he is effectively out of title contention for at least a year now. Following TUF 18 will be tough, unless they also have women on the show. Weird.

It'll be great if he takes his camp serious and makes weight. It be a great fight if he's tuned in 100% and improves his cardio. I can still see Frankie besting him but I'd love BJ to pull out the win and get in the mix at FW

A tomato can?? Are you serious? His last 2 fights have been decision losses to top 5 welterweights, this does not make BJ a can.

I am excited for a BJ return to lighter weight classes.

Personally I'd find it hard nowadays to get excited about BJ fighting in any weight class.
For the past while, he's been a shadow of his former self. I hope he gets back to his old self soon. Not against Edgar though. I'm a big Edgar fan and hope he walks right through Penn.

Trilogy where the same guy won both first fights?

at least with BJ on the show he will have to go to training everyday, so there is no real reason why he wouldn't be "in shape" for the fight. I remember seeing videos of Dana White bitching about him getting high and not going training. he had to call everyday to make sure he was in the gym, cant remember who he was fighting maybe GSP

Leading up to this fight all we'll hear from BJ and his camp is that he's in the best shape he's been in for years, his cardio is through the roof, he's never looked so good.

Then in the fight he'll gas in the 2nd and get mauled to death

Tito Ortiz V Ken Shamrock , Made T.V show Frank lost third fight and announced his retirement after fight (although that lasted 18 months).

When has anything even close to that ever happened other than when he fought at Welterweight?

this match up is so pointless
bj will lose another ud to edgar and retire again

On the other hand tito v rampage is even more pointless given
both are long past it just like bj

I hope frankie is getting well paid for his time given he's losing
so much time here whilst still in his prime
He's the only loser here other than financially maybe

I'd love to know what kind of money these fighters are offered
    to coach on tuf

Ill be surprised if he makes weight. He is too lazy. If he does make weight, he will gas inside the first round.

I think a healthy, lean BJ could be a serious threat at 145. I dont see him beating the likes of Aldo, Mendes or Edgar but I think he could easily make top 10. If he remembers that his grappling is his biggest asset he could be a huge threat. I think he'd quite easily beat Poirier, Swanson, Siver and Lamas if he gets the takedown. He's a killer when hes on top and only gets outclassed when he's tired (which happens to be a lot because of his commitment to the sport being questionable).

If he really is motivated and commited this time I'd love to see him thrown in against the top 10. Edgar is the worst possible match up, a lose lose situation for Edgar. It really looks like Edgar has BJ's number and if BJ gets outworked again by Frankie people will be calling him to retire. Poor matchmaking in my opinion. How great would a fight with Korean Zombie be? It would also be far more marketable.

As far as TUF, the phrase beating a dead horse comes to mind.

I don't see that at all

The myth that penn only loses when he is out of shape has long since gone

I wonder if it's possible to bet on Frankie knocking down BJ for the first time in his career

I don't think he only loses when he's out of shape, but when he's on he's always looked good.

I think the problem with BJ is he doesn't bridge the gap between wrestling and striking. His striking is solid but he's usually either dead set on boxing or on taking the other guy down. He rarely mixes it up, and when he does he's not very good at setting up the takedown with his strikes.

I don't think he'll ever get a belt again but I think he'll be competitive. I'd like to see him fight and not be physically weaker than his opponent. He had moments of brilliance in the Jon Fitch fight and a solid first round against Diaz. If he goes for the takedown and doesn't gas i think he could still be relevant at 145. Frankie's an awful first fight though, some very suspect match making in the UFC lately.
