If the atomic mass of sodium is 23 and the atomic mass chorine is 35.5??

Can anyone explain how this is worked out?

1M solution NaCl will have (23+35.5) 58.5g per litre.

First off, and this might sounds pedantic but it is 1 M - big M for Molar which is moles per liter of mol/l

So, if you are told it is 1 M or 1m/l then you need to work out what the weight of 1 mole is and that is how much will be in one liter!

Also, you could probably just type it into wolfram alpha, but I suspect that is not why you asked...
