Changing just one TSM subject —*when should I bring it up?

    Hey guys,

New junior freshman here. Since I've got my offer I've become quite unhappy about one of my TSM subjects.

When should I start the process of asking to change, and how easily is it done? Should I wait a few weeks to make it look like the subject really doesn't suit me, or what? The website makes it looks quite easy to do this once you discuss it with your tutor and especially within TSM (and given it's only one of the two subjects).

Is it best to do it straight away given that I'm sure, or will it look better if I pretend? I have way more points than the subject combination requires, by the way.

(Also, on a slightly related note: I'm expecting to go up on Leaving Cert. rechecks and will get my first choice (not TSM!) ... can I switch to that this year or will I be told to defer or what because I've missed three weeks of the course?!)

    Thanks guys...

I'd do it immediately so you don't miss out anything.

    I'd do it immediately.

Also, I wouldn't "expect" to go up on rechecks unless you've spotted an error in them adding up the marks. Hope for it, sure, but be aware that it is quite unlikely.

If you do, however, you can usually switch immediately.

I did spot a calculation error when viewing my scripts actually.

Thanks for the advice. So should I bring it up with my tutor as soon as I meet him?

Ex-TSMer here. You should bring it up as soon as possible, because you can only do it within the first 4-5 weeks (and it could well be first come, first served: there's only so many places in each class, so you want to get on the list before others do). TCD admin is slow at the best of times, so get in early to make sure it's all sorted by the deadline. In my year, most people who changed courses moved to their new classes after reading week, so there's a chance you might miss the first 6 weeks, regardless of when you apply.

And if you do go up in the rechecks, you'll probably be offered a new place immediately and it'll be up to you whether to take it or defer for a year. It's worth noting that if it's in another college, you may have missed most of a semester (UCD start 3 weeks before TCD, for example)...
