Has the thong had its day? If so why so? If not, why not?

I was just thinking of this the other day - remember about 10 years ago you would see loads of girls wearing those very low cut hipster jeans with their thongs clearly visible above the waistband at the back? Especially sitting in a bar or somewhere, you'd see rows of exposed lower-backs with fancy thongs on display. (I'm sure guys probably enjoyed the view but I always found it slightly ridiculous looking). I'm glad that fad is over, but I assume lots of girls still wear them, without feeling the need to show the world!

I know some girls like them for their no-VPL quality, but you can get perfectly nice no-VPL knickers now that are really pretty, actually cover your ass and don't show under clothes. I have a couple of thongs in my drawer, (usually ones that came in a set with a bra so I didn't have a choice), but they're rarely if ever worn. I always found them really uncomfortable to be honest, but I know some girls who feel the exact opposite.

I actually don't know if many of my friends wear them these days, it hasn't come up in conversation lately - I'm curious now though, so might ask around!

I tried them and hated them so quickly gave up and bought the no VPL knickers. Never looked back.
I know a woman (45 yo or such) who is SUCH a teenager about things. She wears thongs because she is convinced they're "cool" and "what everyone else is wearing" but hates them and finds them really uncomfortable. I asked her why she bothers as no one is going to know (or really give a damn) as to what her underwear is like. She replied "cause everyone else is wearing them".
She also drinks coffee because she thinks its way more fashionable than tea. She hates coffee.

I think they look great on shapely, tanned bums, but I have a pale flat bum with no muscle definition so I don't think they do me any favours when I have my clothes off at all! I always wear proper knickers now, and have done for at least the last 5 years I'd say.

Most sets these days usually have the option of a thong or a bigger knicker. Thongs definitely have a place, but I think other styles are much more flattering.

I think the opposite. I've never once thought that a thong actually looks good.

Off topic but I bet she is single! I though women were meant to get more confident and secure in their skin as they aged!

The "visible thong" thing was just an early noughties foible (thank you, Sisqo). So while that has had its day, absolutely, I don't think the thong in general has, at all. There are some clothes that you just can't wear anything else with - jersey dresses, for example. Seamless knickers can't cover all bases. Plus, lets face it, they're generally not the sexiest items going, because, by their very vature, they can't have any kind of embellishment. Going on a very unscientific poll of asking my male and female friends, both genders seem to find fitted French-style knickers most attractive. Unfortunately, these often aren't the most clothes-friendly items. So, sometimes a thong is the ideal compromise between feeling sexy and having no VPL. Obviously, the fit is absolutely critical, though. There is nothing worse than seeing a woman who looks like her hips are being garrotted by a thong that's too tight for her.

    Yep.......and can't figure out why.

The funny thing is that when she is just herself she is quite good company and can be good fun. ....when she is relaxed. She spends too much time worrying about what other people think.
Quite honestly the only other people I know who are like that are my 15 year old niece and her friends. They'll grow out of it like most of us did.

And decent underwear costs money. When I was younger (ripe old age of 36 now:p) I used to think it mad to spend lots of money on something that wouldn't be seen. Now I've finally realised that if you get the basics right i.e. good fitting good quality underwear then the outer layers that everyone does see will look much much better.
The cheap Penny's underwear does nothing for you in the long run. .............whats the bets I'll be inundtated with "Penny's knickers are the best ever" cries from fellow Boardsies.......................:D

I'm ambivalent to them. You have nice underwear and not so nice underwear. I wear all kinds, it a little depends on what I'm wearing but very often just whatever I pull out of the drawer. As for nickers you can get relatively cheap no seams ones wherever, good quality bras are way more important.

I'm absolutely obsessive about wearing matching underwear, and sets very rarely come with seamless bottoms, so for that reason alone I tend to wear thongs moreso.

This isn't strictly on topic, but do you buy one bra + 3 or 4 matching bottoms? Or do you have a large number of bras?

I love matching underwear, but never have the patience for it. Plus some days I just really want to wear my Wonder Woman knickers :D.

I buy two pairs of matching knickers for each bra, and usually you can get a matching thong and a matching bigger pair, so that works out perfect. But yes, I have a lot of bras! I love underwear.

And I love comic print or otherwise graphic knickers like that too. Whenever I see plain, brightly-coloured bras, I always buy them. That way you can match your Wonder Woman knickers up with a plain blue or red bra :)

I just love the low-rise jeans/visible thong look! Bring back the thong, I say! Sexiest undergarment ever!

Not all guys. I always thought it was stupid looking. And no offence, but the thong is a piece of clothing that demands a certain type of body. And from what I remember most women didn't have that body.

I think it's time to root through the underwear and throw out all the thongs.

Good point. Very hard to find a set with seamless bottoms and like you I make sure I'm matching at all times.

Speaking as an occasional thong wearer, my only problem was when I would sit up on a bar stool, my low-rise jeans would slip down, exposing my thong. The girls would start pulling at my thong, which was embarrassing, but a bit of fun at the same time. I would hate to see the thong become extinct as a fashion item. So long live the thong!

Have worn them in the past, hate them and although I actually have a very good bum (one of the few parts of me I like), I don't have the tummy for them. They're uncomfortable too although I'd get over that if it was worth it. But I prefer a bit more tummy support, so no to the thong for me.

    I love Penny's knickers :D

I only buy high end bras tho. Penny's don't stock my size and even if they did they probably wouldn't hold me very well so i'd probably still only buy high end bras.

I must admit I too am a big fan of Pennys knickers. Cheap and cheerful, and always nice to have something new to wear out. Agree with you whole heartedly regarding their bras

If you have a "very good bum" you should give them a go every now and again. Agree regarding the lack of support but hard to find something that helps everywhere that also looks attractive

A thong/g-string looks great on a peachy arse, but they are only for sexy-time IMO rather than being everyday knickers.

But what about under a tight business suit in the office, or under a fitted skirt Femme Fetale?

Oh yeh the VPL. I was never concerned about that myself. I don't think people are going to be looking that hard, and I can only do cold bum/continuous wedgie for special occasions. :pac:

I don't like granny knickers either though, apart from shark week. Bikini/high-leg are my favourites for everyday wear. But a thong does make me feel quite sexay on nights out.

They are. I've seen so many beautiful outfits ruined by VPL. Mind you, often it's not just the line of the underwear that's the problem, but the fit aswell. People wearing boyshorts that cut them off at the thighs with fitted dresses, that kind of thing.

Yep, so many really good looks are ruined by poor fitting underwear. Rolls on the back from a bra strap being pulled too tight, knickers that really should be worn a size bigger to allow the flow of material from your skirt/dress/trousers move freely.

They're the business. I get mine in M&S. They are like boy shorts almost and have no seams on them at all. They're very light and flimsy and show no knicker line (when you buy them in the correct size, still no point buying an 8 when you're not an 8) and are comfortable. Unlike the awful cheese cutter thongs.

Agree completely about beautiful outfits being ruined by VPL. Definitely the fit comes into it sometimes but I definitely think the wrong choice of underwear is the killer the majority of the time

Where I work the trouser suit or skirt is the only way to go. Therefore the thong in my opinion is the only way to go too. You can get away with it with black trousers sometimes, but with white, cream or navy anything else is a no no

I'm just not very observant I guess - never particularly notice it.

I do all the time, and it looks horrid, really ruins very nice outfits.

I almost exclusively wear thongs, I'm a size 6-8 and I like them and its rare I find them uncomfortable.

I wear a lot of dresses and wool and jersey dresses leave you little options but thongs when it comes to underwear.

As for the jeans comments you can get low strung throngs that do the same without being visible.

Just don't like thongs. But then I once heard a lady compare them to dentures. ''If you don't persevere you'll never get used to wearing them''. I guess that I just wasn't ready to to take them on in battle. Few times I wore them I found them both uncomfortable and irritating. In later times I have come to like boy shorts and high leg bikini briefs. Like nearly all my underwear, I buy now mostly from ''Camille''. I love the style, the fabric and fit-- and vpl has not been a problem. ''Sloggi'' have some nice knickers too. Especially the high waist/ high leg, really really comfortable. Just cannot go M+S stuff at all.
Fitted skirts and trousers are often so tight that it's impossible to avoid vpl. But there are some lovely slightly flaired and skater skirts to be got now that are quite stylish and still look elegent.

My view is that if you have a vpl with a thong, then your clothes are too tight.

I wear very fitted clothes, to the extent that if I lose weight and my clothes are loose on me, I go to a tailor and have them taken in , and I have never had a vpl issue.

The other side of this is that if you have a vpl with a thong, you are wearing one that is too small and it is showing through your clothes that you are doing so.
