Which is a better car? I'm looking to spend to more than 1500, in or around the year 2000. Diesel or petrol. Are the petrol avensis easier to run than the 1.3/4 corollas?

The 1.6 are a little harder on petrol but they are a nicer more solid car to be fair. At that age I'd go petrol. A pre VVT-I (97-00) 1.6 avensis is pretty much bomb proof and can be got quite cheaply.

Are they easier run than a 1.3 or 1.4 corolla? Which is the better car? I want one that will give no trouble.

How do you mean easier to run? cost, parking, reliability,...

I would say the avensis is better as it is bigger more comfortable but others would disagree.

No guarantee that a 13 year old car wont give trouble

No they're a bigger heavier car than the corolla so they're gonna be a bit heavier on petrol.
    They're not uneconomical though.

Condition is everything, get one that's been owned by the same person for a good while and has maintained it properly.

I will have a 96 xli Corolla (silver) for sale in the next 2 weeks just waiting to get the nct done on it if your interested.

It's older than what your looking for but it's a very well looked after and reliable car, cheap to run, tax and maintain as well.

    PM me if your interested.

I have a 06 Avensis 1.6 and an 08 corolla 1.4. Both great but go Avensis all the time.

As the guy servicing it a couple of months ago said

"Like every other avensis that comes in here there is nothing wrong with it "
