CSPE Action Project

I am currently teaching a 3rd year CSPE class, and they are deciding what action to take for their final project. The group have mentioned suicide as an issue they would be interested in raising awareness for. However, after a bit of research I am not convinced it falls under one of the seven concepts. At a stretch it could fall under Human Dignity and a denial of rights. (bullying leading to suicide) I am reluctant to risk 60% of their grade on a topic that doesn't fit the bill.....

Can anyone shed any light on the subject, is suicide a topic that could be dealt with for the Report on the Action Project?

If you look on pdst website , there's a brochure for CSPE workshops for teachers, there's a specific two hour workshop on action projects, might be a help .

Thanks! Had a look there now and signed up to a workshop, ideally would like to get the project under way as soon as possible to get the write up started. Plus students interest in the topic would help get the activity going with some enthusiasm. Though the workshop will definitely be a great refresher!

If you give the CSPE association an email they might be able to give you advice now, info@cspeteachers.ie . Hope you get more info soon.

It might be ok, if your class raised money for a suicide prevention charity, my advice would be to stay clear of it as its a definite grey area.

It doesn't.....I always classify it under mental health which is not linked to any of the 7 key concepts...I would keep away from it. Its the same with cancer, heart disease etc. If its your first time doing it I would suggest doing a few small group projects...I always do this as each students gets more involved and therefore has their own job and associated skills which are important factors in the write up.

Thanks for the replies, its definitely a mental health issue. I've since discussed Human Dignity and Rights and Responsibilities issues with the group and geared their project more towards bullying and students rights.

The topic may remain in the wings as a by product of the project and it may still be beneficial to have a speaker out to the school on suicide prevention. But I'll be consistently moving it towards a more solid concept now.
