My friend put my name as the registered owner of the car she bought recently because she bought it without having a full licence and so wanted to put it on my name as I have a licence.
I do not drive this car and do not want to be liable for anything. If she drives uninsured or breaks red lights, will I be liable for all this? I did not sign anything she put MY name on the vehicles registered owner document!! Please help me! She is from Pakistan

I presume the documents came to your address?

If it is in your name apply to the motor tax office for a replacement cert, when that arrives use it to transfer out of your name.

Or just phone her insurers and motor tax and tell them, see what they have to say.

But get it out of your name.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 266 ✭✭markfinn

    You don't.
You report her name, license plate and home address to the nearest Garda station immediately. And make sure you get some documentation indicating that you did so. Otherwise who is ever going to believe your protestations that she did it without your consent?

With friends like that, who could ever need enemies?

(Personally, I'd be tempted to report _MY_ car stolen...)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 890 ✭✭✭dh0011

tell her take your name off it. If she refuses ring shannon where the log book was issued and they will send you the form where you can say you have no interest in the car.

Just so you know when a car is parked on the street without insurance, it is in a public place without insurance and the owner is liable. You could lose your licence.

Sounds like your friend is some chancer,

The OP has stated it is her name on the log book, but the so-called friend's address.

@OP. I know you consider this girl a friend. But the way she's behaved says she's a USER!! The time has now come to get the gloves off! Get your name off the log book by any means necessary. Call Shannon first thing and explain what has happened.

    Ask her :
Why she felt it necessary to use your name-Did she even ask for your permission? Are you certain the car's in your name??
And I'd be telling her to insure the vehicle quick smart, or you'll be forced to call the Gards and tell them the car's uninsured.

    1) fill out one of these with your details
    2) get signed and stamped at garda office
    3) send to shannon
    4) wait for new logbook
    5) receive new logbook in your name (with your address)
    6) ring gards
    7) report car stolen

    problem solved...and FREE CAR!!!

Apply for a replacement cert, it gets posted back to you, put it in her name. Simples.
    (May not be entirely legal)

If she registered it to your address then the registration cert would have came to your house.

I don't know how to get it off my name oh my gosh I'm panicking now. I'm scared and worried.
I can't phone any insurer or motor tax because she has not paid insurance or tax. She is waiting to learn to drive before she pays!!!! I can't do anything because the car is registered in MY name but in HER address so all documentation goes to her address

Ring the guards. Driving without insurance is disgraceful.

As said, ring Shannon, explain the situation and that you have no interest in the car. They'll tell you how to sort it out.

Also, get far far away from that person. They are not a friend

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/forms/
form you are looking for is here (Application to amend Declaration for Registration). Fill it out saying what happened and that she has the tax book in your name without your permission.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

a name is just a name...if she didn't use other details of yours, such as your address, then it isn't you, you don't need to do anything ( might be better to get it sorted though)

You will not be liable for any offences she commits. Even parking and speeding tickets won't come to you as they don't have your address.

the owner of the car isn't you, just one of the many people who have the same name as you.

I don't want her To think I dont care for her cos I do but this is not on! What excuse could I use when asking her to switch it to her own name?
Bare in mind she has helped me with alot in the past- getting a good job etc etc

The excuss for switching is that its HER car, NOT yours.

As advised several times, contact Shannon with the contacts details in my last post, who will advice on how to transfer to her name. If the new log book is already in the post, or has already been received by you or your friend, send it back with her details on it under the change of ownership section.

Yes I am positive it's in my name she showed my the document in my name and her address last time I visited her!!
I said "why did u do that" and she said "why don't you trust me"
She clearly put it in my name because maybe she feels if she has the car in my name and her address it will show she is sharing the car and has connections to Ireland I don't know I really don't. She is my good friend but is this a step too far?
I didnt really realise any harm could come of it so I forgot about it then someone said I am liable for her having it uninsured???!

Whatever about putting it in your name as said its not your address and you didn't sign anything so can't see you getting in trouble. I'd still get her to change it though and report it if she doesn't.

Driving without insurance though makes her a danger to everyone especially since she's only learning to drive.

not going to make one blind bit of a difference when deportation time comes. If anything fraud (which this is) should go against her

    where about is she from?
    Is she here legally?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 bianca_bianca

Just to add, part of the reason she put the car in my name is because she wants me to help her with the NCT. she says she cannot get the NCT done as she does not have a full licence!! She wanted me to bring my driving licenve to NCT centee and pass the NCT so she can learn to drive. I told her to sell the car as she is not even insured and she said she needs to pass the NCT first to get a good price! Is it possible to even get an NCT done without being insured in the car?

it is possible to get the nct done without being insured but you need a trailor. Being fully licenced or provisionally licenced doesnt matter.

I think she might plan on you driving the car to the test centre for her. YOU WILL NOT BE INSURED TO DO THIS. Even if you have third party cover driving other cars it doesnt cover cars owned hired to leased to yourself.

With every post you put up I am liking your friend less.

She is taking you for a ride and you are letting her. You have been given lots of good advice here. It is up to you whether or not to act on it. Stand your ground or she will walk all over you.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 890 ✭✭✭dh0011

if she is here legally there is no reason whatsoever for the car to be in her name.

Is it taxed and has it any nct left?

You could tell her that if the car is in her name you can drive it to the NCT centre for the test but if it is in your name you cant. (This is true provided car is taxed and even if the NCT is out a guard will normally be sound if you have proof your on your way to the test)

apply for a duplicate vehicle ownership document and when obtained fill in her details as new owner/ change of ownership and sent to the address in shannon

I cannot drive the car to NCT as I am not insured. She does not hve insurance or tax yet! She says I have to go with her to the NCT as I am the owner of the car! Is this true? Do u need to produce your driving licence at the NCT centre? I would prefer not to have my licence linked with th car...

I'm sorry OP but grow a pair and tell her to take your name off the car or else, if that was my so called friend I would have it reported for theft by now. Don't even think of driving the car, taking it for the NCT or anything like it. The owner of the car does not have to take the car for an NCT, anyone with proper photo ID can do it, you would have to produce your license or passport in this case.

She can take the car for an NCT with a provisional license, she can buy with car without having any license. Why is she telling you so many lies if she's your friend?

Corktina is correct, Say for example your name is Joe Smith. Your friend applied for a log book in the name of Joe Smith, using her address. There are probably hundreds of other Joe Smiths. None of them you.. for all intents and purposes she may as well have made up a name.. if she drove the car and hit someone for example and drove off, the police would be looking for Joe Smith at her address. They would probably figure out that it was her but they wouldn't be looking for you unless you lived at that address.
