Has anybody used a metatarsus/metatarsal insert?

I am suffering lately with pain in my right foot which seems to be worse after a cycle and it is located on the ball of the foot and the surrounding area. Having looked online for a solution it seems that I need to move the cleats on the cycling shoe further back or alternative to use different insoles. I have seen Sidi Metatarsal inserts and was wondering have any other cyclists used such an item, are they worth trying?

    Thanks,

have your foot pain assessed by a doc or chartered physio, there is a problem that sometimes occurs from one foot being bigger than the other and the shoe being a bit tight and squeezing the toes together. you could try to loosen that shoe also

I find these good. But you could have a completely different issue.

In my personal experience of foot pain, problems with pain "in" the foot are most often caused by not enough space, so I usually remove the insole and see how that feels.

If you think about the limit case, which is a foot pressing on an open flat hard surface, that shouldn't really cause pain because your feet are designed for it.

MOD VOICE: As 12 Sprocket said, the best advice if it is a problem is to have it assessed by a professional. As always, one clear warning, no medical advice in any form whatsoever.

I got those too. They made a big difference for my sore feet numb toes thing. I bought them in a shop in Swords, the name of which escapes me now. They also have them in Cycleways, where they also have one of those heatsensitive pad things for determining what shape insert would suit your foot best.

There is a good explanation leaflet that comes with the insoles that explains how to set them up for best performance.

Thanks for above comments, really what I wanted was to see if anybody used the particular insert. I have the Specialized footbeds already (red) and find them great, even use them in my Sidi shoes, it could be as somebody pointed out that I need a trip to a doc to make sure that there is no underlining issue.

I used to get regular problems around my toes after a while on the bike. It occurred most often, and with greater intensity, on my smaller foot which made me think that lack of space in the shoe wasn't the issue. The pain in my toes would sometimes persist for a day or two after a particularly long and tough ride. That made me think that the pain was from bruising and/or aching muscles. A day after one ride I was able to reproduce the pain by standing in bare feet and rolling my foot over onto the arch. That made me think that increased arch support might help.

I bought some of the highest (green) Specialised footbeds/insoles and they helped a lot. They eliminated the main problem. I occasionally get some discomfort still but it's quite rare and loosening off the shoe straps a little tends to sort that out.

At the time that I started using those insoles I considered installing some of the small shims that came with them. But I didn't want to change more than one thing at a time and the higher insoles were so effective that I never considered using the shims since. The insoles were a stop-gap solution at the time, my intention had been to go with moulded insoles (e.g. esoles) which are not actually much more expensive than the Specialised ones they were just not as readily available at the time. Personally if I was looking to change now I'd go the full moulded insole route before trying various inserts.
