    Hi all,

Installed linux mint last light on my aging AMD PC using min4rwin strategy, didn't bother with partitions as I didn't know how well it would turn out. Upon installing I was wrong has really sped things up mainly use if for web browsing playing music etc PC is situated in the kitchen have the main PC in the bedroom. Am using the LXDE desktop which really helps alot, a few things that I cannot get right is one, accessing the Windows folders on the drive, am I correct in saying \dev\sda1 is something on lines that I should be looking at? Also accessing the Windows shares on the PC upstairs Gigolo keeps timing out, my other devices connect just fine for instances Android media PC have plugged into the TV will connect without a hiss, maybe I am doing it wrong? I want to get another year or so out of it, am trying to convince my roommate to switch, only thing holding him back is he uses WMP11 and wants to keep it way, only thing he does is browse the web download mp3s from Youtube loads them up into WMP burns them to a audio CD if I could get the same situation in Linux which he would be familiar with would be great, only problem I am facing is trying to access his music from Linux.

I've never tried mint4win, but my understanding is that it is similar to wubi (which I've also never tried), and that it mounts the windows partition that contains the linux filesystem under /host.

Also FYI, you if you decide to stick with linux, you should really consider mint4win a short term solution, there is always going to be a bit of a performance hit involved with bouncing through the NTFS partition to get to the linux file.

As for the problem mounting a windows share, I'd suggest going to the terminal and running (with your sever and share information swapped in)
    mkdir temp
sudo mount -t cifs //<server-name>/<share-name> temp -o guest --verbose

And see if it gives you any information that might indicate where the problem lies. You can post the output here if you need a hand, feel free to remove any identifying information first.
