Im going through about 1 white shirt every 6 weeks (at 39 quid a pop thats nearly 320 quid a year on ****e shirts alone).

Problem is they keep fading. Im told its because Im not putting them in a whites only wash.

I am going to start doing this, or do you think it would be a better idea to handwash them?

    Thanks :)

    a) whites-only wash is an absolute must
    b) make sure the soleplate of your iron is always clean
    c) wear an undershirt. Always.

Also if you want to keep them super white, a small dash of bleach to the wash does the trick. Really helps with those grubby collar stains

Only wash with whites, if you mix with colours whites will become grey in no time.

Use a scoop of Vanish Oxi-action white in the wash and Comfort fabric conditioner for whites. The fabric conditioner is a purple colour which helps neutralise discolouration.

Hair gels, moisturiser (if you use it) and aftershave can discolour colours - allow aftershave to dry completely before dressing.

    1) ALWAYS wash whites with whites.
    2) Use a whitening washing powder or add a whitening agent (Vanish Oxi and other brands have these - get them in the supermarket isle that has washing deterent).
    3) Wash at the highest temperature the fabric allows - it'll be written in the label.
    4) Any body products, deoderant, hair gel, after shave etc. will locally stain the shirt. The best way to combat this is to allow all products to dry completely before you put the shirt on and wash the shirt after every wear. There are deoderants on the market designed to not leave marks on white clothes, I haven't used these personally, but you could check them out.
    5) Pre-treat any stains with some concentrated washing detergent and/or wash booster immediately before washing.
    6) Don't use fabric softener sheets in the dryer - can leave yellowish stains on whites.
    7) When ironing, don't use anything on the shirt other than steam and make sure the iron is really clean!

Bleach will whiten clothes but will weaken the fabric over time so you could try it as a once off on shirts that are already gone a dodgy colour (again, if the fabric allows - it'll be written on the label) to try bring them back to a more white colour. You can buy clothes bleach (in the detergent isle) that won't be as harsh on the fabric as standard, household bleach but I don't know how well it would whiten an already faded shirt. Handwashing is a pain in the bum, but if you want to go down this route use the products/tips I mentioned above.
