    hi guys
I'm a 34 yr. old married father of 4 young children,
I'm unemployed now since may and I want to get off my butt and do some thing about it,

I've noticed around my area of where I live there's plenty of jobs a person can do to improve the appearance of the town, to be able to maintain gardens for the elderly and so on

but to start a business in this climate would be madness and as embarrassing it is to be on benefits, its worse not to have them,

I wonder if an organisation could be made with help from the government and the social welfare to encourage people to get out of the house and get active

the main object of this organisation would be to be of help to the county council, the hse and the st Vincent de paul, and have any one participating in this organisation can do it for an unlimited time till they get job with a nominal bonus for expenses at the end of the week

would anyone with their views be able to help me perfect this so as I can start approaching our politicans etc to make this happen

You want people to work for nothing and do the county councils work for them ?. No thanks.

Your thoughts are commendable. You might like to check out http://www.volunteer.ie/

But sadly there are all sorts of fishooks. To name a few:

You say the scheme would be for "anyone". Howwever to do work for elderly people (or other vulnerable people) through a government scheme or reputable community organisation means getting garda clearance for each person. We already hear stories of garda clearance being slow for people applyng for jobs, I'd hate to see the system clogged up even further with not-very-keen volunteers.

Who would pay for materials? And manage them to make sure they don't get stolen or diverted to projects in the volunteers own homes.

Who would make sure that the work was done safely? eg dealing with the situation if a gung-ho volunteer decides to maintain a park in a way that's not in the best interests of the park-users.

There are such schemes already, community employment, rural social scheme, TUS and Gateway.

Check with your local employment services office if you are eligible for any of them, or alternatively seek out volunteering opportunities.

Talk to your elected representatives and ask for their advice. They may have some help on other schemes etc.

Except Tus does not have the nominal bonus nor expenses at the end of the week:)
