The Pedigree Chum Puppy bag of nuts is very good for young dogs, I think its the chicken and rice flavour.

I used it on a pup I had a good few years ago and it settled him down.

I agree with you and use pedigree chum all the time and I find it very good but maybe 28% protein is too much for a dog maybe 16-18% would be plenty until he gets bigger and stronger.

I was about to say the same thing about % protein.
Would the dog sprout up like a weed( and I don't mean that it would be any way scrawny) and effectively grow faster than its joints can cope with ?.
This may not be an issue with springers ( don't know) but I'd be very slow to do it with setters or pointers or any other "tall" dog.

If a dog was not on nuts & eating raw or eating a wild diet as it would of years ago would it not be getting a lot more than the protein %s mentioned above?
Not that I agree or disagree just curious on people's thoughts.

I use Brilly's choice, it's gluten free, my lad has a few digestive probs but thrives on this, Declan delivers too

Royal canin is high in protein and fibre

If the stool is soft then they are lacking fibre, this can cause problems if this is not correct, it can lead to there anal gland becoming swollen and would need a vet to break them and give you a course of steroids.

I don't claim to know the best food over all for dogs, and I wish I did . But I will say that any dog fed a mix of raw meat, tripe and bones etc, etc either as their full diet, or mixed in with nuts that I come across, are in far better condition and general health than a dog fed normal nuts. In my opinion they also have far better stamina etc in the field once they are kept fit or as fit as a similar dog fed nuts alone.

I had a litter of pups back at the end of March and fed the pups meat and tripe etc from when I weaned them and they are all doing great for their new owners. I keep in touch with most owners and still get to see some of them, and I defiantly notice a difference in the ones that are now back eating only dog nuts, compared to those still fed meat etc.

I am lucky enough to have access to a decent supply of meat, tripe and bones etc (though its a bit of work getting it). And I know not everyone can. But I honestly believe its so much better for the dogs. And that any bit of meat and bones added in will help no end.

If you research it guys these is a very strong argument that dogs can not get too much "quality" protein. Dogs thrive on protein and use it for all their functions. As I see it the protein heads to where its most needed first, then to the rest of the body in order of necessity ie after it feeds all the vital functions, it replenishes the hair & skin. Its very seldom you will see a dog fed decent raw meat/bones with a dull/poor coat. As I see it some nuts replicate this by loading the food with oil etc. Any excess protein from raw meat is just pi**ed away no problem if not needed.

Guys again this is just my opinion based on my own experience and research. But, I do recommend trying it, add in what ever you can get ie butcher scraps, tripe any off cuts from deer, rabbit are great, and they love raw chicken legs/wings etc, meatier the better.

Have a look at the skinners range, I get the duck and rice off amazon, works out reasonable enough.

I'm getting the duck and rice delivered for less than 25€.
Delivery is free, you need to select the free delivery option. I think it automatically goes to the 2 day delivery. They charge for that one.

Oscar. Can't beat it. € 30 15 kg. Needs very little , even for a large dog. Franchised by a bloke in Cork, who'll deliver it for the price.

I use nutts about dogs for my lads nd if i ever run out and am waiting on a delivery i get Kasko complete from the local co-op its only 20€ for 20kg bag and suits all my dogs!

Good friends with a local butcher so always get plenty of left over meat to supplement and treat them too!

I'm using Bluegrass working dog nut with about 2yrs now and find it excellent. Stools are always dry and the dogs stamina is always consistant. I also give them beef mince which i buy from the knackery in 13lb bags for €5. I give them the mince every second day this time of year and they are thriving.

Anybody ever try giving their dogs lamlac? I've been giving it to them now twice a week with the last 3 weeks and they seem to be jumping out of their skin after it!

That is what I use as well. I mix up with food scraps and make a cheap Aldi gravy.
I also use Pedro Wonderdog Muesli which is a bit more oily and it gives the dogs a brilliant shine(you can even feed it to them dry)
Both types of feed are only €15 for 15kg
