    Hi Lads,lassies,

I'm thinking of a having a go at developing some apps for farmers and farming.

I'm scouting for ideas that people might like or would find useful.
Examples might be things like herd management with bar code/ tag reading ,
Slurry spreading/ crop spraying with GPS mapping or maybe even an eMart , like ebay, but for livestock or a dating app for animal breeding services

    Any feedback would be appreciated
    Regards
    FarmAppy

i had an idea for a grass measuring app a few weeks ago. You could eyeball and put the covers into your phone and then it would tell you which paddocks to go to next and how many grazings you would get to that paddock or whether your in surplus or deficit

    Thanks for the feedback Jersey.

Would you want a little map for that or would you list the paddocks by name?

I could integrate it with google maps. And allow you to mark out your areas.

Sounds interesting, it could be a nice extension of agrinet, which does some of it (tells you if your in surplus/deficit etc), but actually predicting the amount of grazing such a field has isn't a 1/2 bad idea, the calculations behind it would be fairly simple (no of cows x kg/day is your demand), then work out what the field is worth based on the grass in it.

Going one step further, say you have a paddock map, make that interactive, which shows how to divide up the paddock based on say 12hr rotations. Going really fancy you could have it linked to your phone gps, so when your rolling out the temporary wire the phone measures out the division. I use temporary fencing the whole time (takes 2mins to run across a paddock with one while on the quad), measurements are always very ad hoc I'll admit, and I never quite know if the area is correct for the cows to last that 12hr stint.

Single unattached Bull, seeks multiple mates, not fussy about appearance , have own trailer, willing to travel for a fee

Would there be a demand, would people pay a couple of euro like donedeal?

I don't see why this wouldn't be possible, would be a nice little app with maybe a Web based interface to mark up the paddocks once off and then phone based after that..

Would people have a preference for an android or iPhone based app?

Just a basic tick sheet containing a list of animals in herd with option for photo or coloured icon (Belgian Blue, Brown whitehead etc) so that I can tick off each animal as I count or check them (especially when grass is getting scarce and they are dotted all over the place, hiding behind hedges, moving from field to field, etc.)

    So ideally, on a line,

    Tag number (last 4 digits)
    Breed icon/photo
    Checkbox

I would like to be able to associate cows with calves so that a calf - or at least a link to the calf's record - would appear on the same line as the cow as I generally find them together. There should be an option to automatically hide checked animals from the list

Each animal should also have a location field (not shown) so that I can associate them with whatever paddock/outfarm they are currently on and therefore only appear on the list for that area

It would be nice to be able to drill down into some basic info on the animal - the kind of stuff that might be useful in the field, Sire, last AI etc - but nothing too complicated as the main function is as a tick sheet.

I know there is some similar stuff out there but it seems to be either very basic generic sheets or over complex or expensive herd management packages

In my case, I'm only looking at a few dozen animals but they're often dotted over five fields with hedges in between

That would be my ideal portable app. Anything more complex is for the computer. Of course I may be the only one that thinks this!

You make a good point. Keeping it simple is the key to a useful app. If it's to awkward it never gets used. This could also be useful for sheep I presume

A calving or lambing date calculator possibly showing up repeat dates, would be great and a medicine recording app so as I dose or inject an animal I could input details there and then.

ye that sounds good timmay. You would get more ppl measureing because its so simple. If you could just hold the results on your phone and then it syncs with your agrinet it would be twice as handy

This app should be of benefit to small farmers too.
I was looking for a simple app to keep track of cattle.
    Tag number.
    Breed
    Age
    Date tested
    Illness if any
Date of bulling, bull code, breed
    Due date
    Ease of calfing
Then expenditure and income section= profit or loss
If you come up with the app I will buy it
    Good luck with your quest
    Keep us informed

Scanner app for around calving time.. scan the bar code of the cow and scan the bar code of the new calf tag so they are linked. tick box for the sex of the calf. take a picture of both cow and calf and link them to the scanner app.

Could also add in a fertiliser rate calculater. Say have a list of fields by name. You would already has the sq area of each field entered on setup. They if you wanted to spread 2 bags per acre in a particular field it would calculate the amount of bags required.
