Not sure about Dublin Bus but you can't bring it on the Luas at all..

My boyfriend has tried a few times but they won't close the doors and move off until he had gotten off with the bike. Can be very frustrating.

There's absolutely no reason, that I understand, why you can't bring it on the Luas, especially at off-peak times when the trams are practically empty.

    Hi there clairek6,

I've moved your thread from our Travel forum to Commuting and Transport where it would be better suited.

    Thanks,

Even cities in America where no owns a bike have racks on the front of the bus for you to put your bike on it

Although I can't see it working in the Dublin, as some bus stops are too congested to allow it

YES! Great idea.. i'm registered! It's €10 for a year and even if you don't use it a lot it does come in handy sometimes!

thank you all for the replys! thats so annoying, I'm moving up for college in DCU in a few weeks and thought the bike would be handy to get to college and friends accommodation mainly, but my only way to bring it to dublin would be by train so using the luas/dublin bus would have only been a once off (til I wanted to bring it home of course!)

cycle it, 95% of the Dublin Bus network is within easy cycling distance anyway and all of the Luas is.

Irish Rail will take bikes under certain circumstances. http://www.irishrail.ie/index.jsp?p=120&n=153

Luas and Dublin bus will only accept folding bikes, but they like them to be covered.

Bus Éireann will accept bikes, but only if there is space.

Well my accommodation is a 25 min bus journey from o connell street and considering I dont know my way around dublin, attempting to cycle that seems like a big no

so a max range of maybe 8-10km, DB will struggle to get you any further in 25 mins, probably much shorter.
As for routes www.maps.google.ie and you can easily work it out.

Crumlin, for example, is around 25 minutes from O Connell St. It's quicker by bike.

You would be surprised but bus journey times can be very deceptive. They tend to take routes that take a long time in order to service the most passengers. Your journey is probably not that long.

Do what the cookie monster says and find a route. I would add that you should try the route before you start college, just to get familiar with it. I'd bet that it's shorter than you think. My younger sister cycles from Glasnevin to UCD in around 45 minutes so unless you live in another county, you should be fine.

Leave your bike at home and buy one from Rothar when you get to Dublin.

Plus if your bike is any way decent I wouldn't be bringing it to college.

okay thanks I'll look into it, suppose it is my only option. a bit awkward since I'll need to transport my luggage also but we'll see!!

Can you not come without it at first, do a reccy on a suitable route from Heuston, and then bring it with you the next time when you have less gear with you?

There was a bike on the luas tonight from heuston to abbey street. The luas driver allowed it on at tue front of the tram.

I think those foldy bikes are allowed on the Luas (I have seen them)
Officially i think normal bikes are not allowed! although I have seen one on a luas before!

As a cyclist I think if there is space it should be allowed but the Luas arent really suited to it!
